When memory was expensive software had to be written more tightly, this led to less bugs as the software was limited by the hardware so testing was more robust. With the advent of cheaper memory software authors have become a little less constrained and the code has, not in all cases, (i will cut them some slack), become more bloated and hence more error prone.
