Paul Adams
In the December RCM&E there is Edge 540T plan made out of EPP foam which looks very interesting. Have done a search on the intranet to try and find a supplier of EPP foam without success. Anybody know where I can get some from? Regards Paul
Tim Mackey
Getting a bit like hens teeth apparently - even Stan Yeo of PMP is packing in the EPP model making due to lack of supply.
Foamie Dave
Hi Paul, Tryhttp://robotbirds.co.uk/http://www.flyingwings.co.uk/http://www.epp-versand.de/http://www.eppfoam.co.uk/Quite a few shops sell it but dont advertise...like Timbo says sometimes it can be tricky to get hold of so I tend to stock up when I see it. If your planning on a bulk buy theres a few great shops in the States that have good quality foam at the right price but its only worthwhile if you're stocking up for a few planes as the P&P will cost more than the foam. http://rcfoam.com/http://epp540.comHope you like the Edge a few more pics in the gallery http://www.modelflying.co.uk/gallery/images.asp?sp=&v=5&UAbN=

Paul Adams
Dave - Fantastic looking model from all ways up.Thanks for the info on where to get the foam. Would you recommend any particular density of foam to use?
Foamie Dave
Cheers chaps, Really appeciate yer kind comments Paul, anyrthing around1.3# or 1.9# density will be fine. If youve never used EPP before you'll be surprised how flimsy it is but by the time youve added the carbon strips and tubes it will be fine.Theres a little vid here if you're interested..apologies for the flying (its me at the stix) although the landing approach was a first for me (downwind with a dying lipo..had to do something quick )
Tim Mackey
Well recovered there Dave, hope you had your timer running so you dont get caught next time She flies real well.

Ben Mullins
A little bit off topic, but . . . What do you stick EPP and Depron together with? Also what do you cover it with, If at all!? I plan on making something from green air designs and want to get all stuff in one go. Thanks for help! Ben
Tim Mackey
The GWS type contact adhesive is Ok, as UHU POR. Hot glue guns can also be used with care, or foam friendly Cyano. Many peeps just paint the stuff with emulsion paints from the DIY shed. Foam friendly acrylics, or even car paint cans ( but watch the propellent it can melt foams. )
Foamie Dave
Yep.. what he said Ive also covered my foamies with plastic film in the past. Use Oracover as it shrinks at a lower temperature than Solarfilm etc, but spray the foam with 3M77 spray adhesive beforehand . Be carefull though as it will add quite a bit of weight and is a bit of a PITA to get a nice finsh around compound curves. Worth the effort if you have the patience of a saint. Ben Mullins
OKey dokey! Thanks alot. Would you just sand it to get a smooth finish?
Foamie Dave
Just leave it as it is and spray paint it.. Depron is very smooth to begin with. EPP is a little rougher but by the time you're 20ft in the air you wont be able to tell what its made of. If you're new to foam, in a nutshell, Depron is quite brittle, allowing only a little flex before either creasing or snapping, EPP is more flexable and quite resilliant but dosnt look as nice close up. John Welch
Hi, Nice plane, good flight. I expect it's ewasy after a few years modelling but to acomplete novice it's daunting, but as they say, nothing ventured, nothing gained. Foamie Dave
Missed these last posts..soz.Hugh it depends on the size of the sheets as there dosnt appear to be a standard size.Start with half a dozen 9mm, 3 x 5mm and 4 x 3mm as a rough guide and take it from there.John , if you can hack a balsa kit together its just as easy. The worst bit is cutting the parts and waiting for the glue to dry
John Welch
Thanks Foamie Dave. You make it sound a lot easier than I would imagine.Sorry I couldn't reply sooner but laid low with a chest virusJohn Welch
Foamie Dave
Its just down to a little bit of practice I suppose. Because EPP is relitively inexpensive compard to most modeling materials, if it all goes seriously wonkey its usually only a quid or so down the tube at most so its a great material to experiment with. Another advantage is when a model reaches the end of its lifespan , just remove the "expensive" carbon reinforcement and good bits of foam for the next project. I like to see it as doing my bit for the environment...my missus just says i'm cheap. Get well soon mate
Simon Milburn
Hi FD Im from Australia and just purchased the december issue tody, ( I think we are a couple of months behind with the mag ) Ive built balsa before, though not proffesional like, but not foam, would you consider the edge something a beginner could tackle. And also where would one obtain EPP from nice flying by the way simon
David E
I'm looking for a good source of 3mm and 5mm EPP in the UK. I'm thinking of building the Tiger Moth from the free plans in the most recent issue of RCME. I tried the links in the earlier post, the German one seems to be the only one with 3mm in stock, but I can't understand most of the website (schoolboy German is a bit rusty!) and I've no idea how much postage would cost. Oh, and the eppfoam.co.uk one didn't seem to be a shop selling anything Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks!
