Eck
Hello everyone,I'm new to this forum business, but not quite so new to the building board and sticks. My return to modelling, after a break of 23 years, was prompted by, of all things, one of those little Picoo - z helicopters....... I bought one for £18 from our local Tesco, and it reminded me of reading "hovering about" in either RCM&E or RM all those years ago, when the cost of getting started in rotary-wing modelling was prohibitive. I started looking for something a bit more controllable, and discovered that an RTF electric-powered helicopter, with collective pitch and including 6 channel 35MHz radio could be had for just over £100! What a revelation! So I bought an Esky Honey Bee King 2........ Still, I learned lots about ordering spare parts, and the importance of training gear! My 26 year old son, Ben, who'd never previously shown any interest, then ordered himself a fixed-wing model from EBay, which looked just like one of the powered gliders I'd had so much fun with "back in the day", except that it came fully built from plastic and foam, included 4-function 35MHz gear, spanned 31" and cost £30! So, to *ahem* "keep him company" I bought a set of Spektrum gear, a GWS foamy AT-6 and one of those "bellend" outrunners from BRC...BTW, When is an AT-6 a warbird? Answer - When it's painted up as an RAAF Wirraway! We're currently having loads of fun flying in the local park, but will have to look into joining a club at some point over the winter. Thanks to all for the helpful posts I've read all over the forums, which put me right on a number of issues, and I look forward to chatting with you! Tim Mackey
Hi Eck - and welcome to “The Friendly Forum” - the very vast majority of flyers do return to the fold eventually! Things have moved on considerably as you have already discobvered! - especially so with electric flight, and there are lots of threads in the forum on the subject. If you have not already done so, could I ask you to have a read of these few guidelines we have listed to help you with using the forum…. read the “pinned stickies” which are shown with a red “pin”. I know you have past experience but here’s a few other links which may be helpful. Perhaps this in particular may help And this. For a list of clubs in your area try this…. http://www.bmfa.org/clubs/index.html Finally…..please consider filling in a little more about yourself on the profile page - that way you will be sure to get more response to your questions! You don’t have to go overboard - take a look at a few others and you will get the idea. Once again, welcome on board and have fun! Timbo. Eck
Again, Timbo, many thanks for the wise words. You're right in saying that much has changed, in fact I'll be throwing out a lot of old 27MHzgear that was still boxed up in the spare room. I'll probably keep hold of the old Futaba servos (although they seem HUGE compared to what's available now!) and my old deezils.I suspect that electric is the way to go forward, and (although it feels like cheating) foam may be the the building material of choice for the near future (It's as easy as building an Airfix kit - the skill is in the trimming!) Myron Beaumont
Welcome Eck !Why not put your old gear on the "swap shop" thread ? I can think of at least one person that has his own collection of oldies for oldies that might be interested in negotiations . No names mentioned but -Do you like camping I wonder ?Grumpy Myron

Eck
Myron - Not so grumpy then! Thanks for the tip about the swap thread. i'll have to do an inventory and figure out what may still be useful to folk. I've had to chuck all my old Rx flight packs due to "black wire". Phil- The galling thing is, my son seemed to take to it like a duck to water. He can outfly the "old F£$t" no problem. Mind you, he practiced for weeks on a sim before ever taking a model out. Maybe that helps the confidence.
