Multiplex Smiley

Hi Scott

My boy had a Multiplex Smiley many years ago, but didn't really get on with it, as, though it was a bit sedate, one one occasion we lost a Gunther prop on climb out, with the inevitable results of an uncontrolled spin into the ground. As Air Vice Marshal Park might have said "That should damn well never have happened"  - electric twins aren't supposed to lose a motor, but those Gunther props were just a push fit on the motor shaft.

We used it as a nice slow and steady aerial photography platform, with a Halina 35mm compact camera fitted in the cockpit and actuated with a microservo. With the stock Permax Sp400 motors, Gunther props and IIRC a 7 cell 2000mah Sub-C the Smiley would ROG off a fairly long run up and just pootle about the sky. The camera was an occasional cockpit occupant, normally the Smiley carried a very good likeness of her pilot at the time. 🙂

The Smiley didn't make the cut when it came to relocating some of the models in storage when we moved to Scotland.
