John Tee
enjoyed putting this model together. The undercarriage is prebuilt from piano wire with strong springs for spreading the load, the model is fairly heavy for its size. on my first flight the model was quite badly out of balance so a landing was made. i missed the strip and landed in some loose soil used to fill a rut by the strip, this acted as an emergency brake stopping the model very quickly and taking out the u/c. on first inspection not much damagejust broken joints on the various u/c members. back at the pits I found that two joints had sprung but the main member that the wheels fitted onto had snapped (approx 8 swg.) further inspection showed that all the various wire bits were spot welded together and where the break was coincided with a spot weld. It looks as if the welding had burnt into the wire leaving a weak spot.
Garry Pollard
Hi John Most ARTF models seem to have a weak u/c problem, so much that I tend to beef it up on assembly, and up to now no problems. However I tend to land on the strip rather than in soil which is going to serverly test and u/c. I do feel that your remarks re the spot welding are dead right and I always bind any joints with wire and solder. I think I am a belt and braces man Garry
