Jonathan Lewzey
I'm looking at buying a 30e/25e size 3D model on the extra, edge, sukhoi, MX or katana lines and like the look of the Hyperion Edge 540 and Sukhoi Su 31. Has anyone any experience of these aircraft, or indeed any of the other hyperion 25e series (i'm interested in build quality and how they fly 3D mainly). Alternatively, if anyone can suggest any other suitable 30e size 3D aerobats for a reasonable price (e.g. I can't afford £150 for the sebart katana ) i'd like to hear about them. Keith Lewzey
Do we assume nobody on the entire forum has ever had one of these models or can recommend anything else 23/30e size???
David Ashby - Moderator
What about the Overlander 30 series Jonathan - I'm still flying my Sukhoi here to bits - love it. They're about £100 now I believe. I'm not sure who distributes Hyperion models but it's not one of the big UK firms so the user base is smaller I guess. Keith Lewzey
Hi David The Hyperion range of models plus motors & esc's are all available from Robotbirds & look very good I have to say. If you have 5 mins dive into their website & have a look. I was considerring the Overlander extra 260 30e model for myself a month or two ago but ended up going for the YT International Zlin 50L which I felt was more an aircraft from my teenage years & the colour scheme looks great. Jonathan is looking for an Edge or Extra because it is his era & more 3d capable (he hopes) hence the request for the experience of others. Heres hoping for a few more replies. Thanks David
David Ashby - Moderator
No worries Keith, just remembered a new 30 size Katana from Phoenix but it's just out so I've not seen it or spoken to anyone who's flown it. here the link. - quite pretty too. Jonathan Lewzey
I think i've decided on the Edge so unless anyone says they're really bad thats what i'll go for. I'm also going for the new Hyperion ZS3014/14 which is designed to replace the recommended 3019/12, being more efficient. The only thing i can't decide on is the ESC: do i go for the Hyperion Atlas 45A (also from robotbirds) or go slightly safer with the pulso 60A form www.pulso.co.uk? Jonathan Lewzey
Just looked at the Phoenix katana on SMC and it weighs an absolute ton compared to the other 30e stuff. i'd expect a standard weight to be about 1-1.2kg (set by the sebart series), but this katana is expected to weigh 1.6-2kg! Not convinced by the quality of the phoenix stuff anyway from some of the reviews how plain they look. sometimes it doesn't really look like they've made an effort. Jonathan Lewzey
Here's a link to the hyperion 25e series page on robotbirds and to the edge i'm looking at. its very light at 1000-1150g AUW here's the ZS3014/14 and i'm considering the Atlas 45A or pulso 60A (i've been really impressed with my pulso 11A so far)
Merlin spit
not sure if youve seen one of these SEAGULL EP EDGE 540 ive got one great flyer, i did a basic build blog on here and there a couple of other members who have one too .very well built and for £60 just watch the tail weight when building
Keith Lewzey
Hi Austen What is the 3D capability of the Seagull Edge like? The reason I ask is it is smaller & heavier than the Hyperion model!
Merlin spit
keith , im not really a 3d flyer more sport acrobatics but im sure with the right power it would be good as a 3d model
Jonathan Lewzey
thanks for your suggestion Austin; i'm looking for an all out 3D'er to try and fly the book with tbh. Power isn't everything with 3D models (trust me, i'm an indoor flyer) so the less the wing loading, the better as far as i'm concerned. Chris Card
The overlander 30e and 50e range are well built for the money. Vulcan Hobbies currently has them on offer much cheaper than Overlander.
Jonathan Lewzey
thats great peevie, or would have been if i hadn't already bought one! see my previous post. actually, with all the problems a clubmate has had with his extra 260 from overlander i wouldn't have bought one anyway. the hyperion is brill and great value for money
