Scale sizing, how ?

Hi widget,

well it goes like this....

The ME 109 had a span of approx 9.87m I think. So first we convert that to inches...

9.87x39=385   (its times 39 because there are approximately 39 inches in a metre)

So this tells us that the wingspan of a ME 109 was approximately 385 inches (give or take an inch or two)

Now your model has a span of 55 inches - so we can now work out the scale of your model - its just

385/55=7

So your model is about 1:7 scale. Now your average guy is say 5 foot 10 or so, that's 70 inches. So at 1:7 scale 70 inches is 10 inches (just divide by 7).

So the answer is: you ideally want a 1:7 pilot, failing that you want a pilot figure that (if he was "complete" and standing up) would be about 10 inches tall.

A 1:6 pilot would be OK - it would just be a "tall bloke" similarly you could get away with a 1:8 pilot - it would be a "little bloke"!  But 1/7th is the ideal.
