Erfolg
I have a Guillows P47 Thunderbolt KitI would like to build it as a Electric (Brushless+Lipo) R.C. The kit looks to be reminiscent of the rubber powered jobs I vaguely remember in the 60s.Has anyone built this model as an electric R.C. model? I would like to know how you built it and what you learnt (or what would you would do differently).Conceptually I am tempted to plank the fuselage with 1/16 balsa, instead of just tissue. But I have concerns about weight, the fuselage being so rotund. Also I would like to have an access hatch on the top of the fuselage. In the case of the wing the multi stringer spar arrangement, with no shear webs between spars causes me concern. With the offset between lowered and upper spars there appears to be no simple way of providing the feature. Again 1/16 sheet would appear to be desirable. The aerofoil looks a bit strange to me, pretty flat bottomed with maximum thickness well back (reminiscent of the 60s laminar foil sections). I guess it works, any comments At 30 inch span weight would appear to be a big issue. The design of the wing has no washout, at least indicated on the plan (as far as I can see). It would appear to necessary, does anyone have comments or experience? I await your commentsErfolg
Ben Mullins
Hey Erfolg, I too was wondering about making a Guillows kit electric RC. Not sure how to do it. Ill have a search around, someone must have ventured down this road! Ben.
Erfolg
BenYou can find some references to conversions. Many used brushed motors, so I guess they were built a little back in time. There is a video of a Stuka conversion, flew but seemed twitchy. Many seem to change the aerofoil and incidence, generally indicating that the section and rigging are suited to free flight, at near the stall and drifting with the wind. Yet CL is mentioned as an alternative use. I do not know, what the answer is. I have bought 2 more kits since, to join my collection.RegardsErfolg
Ben Mullins
Hi Erflog, I've looked on Youtube and there seems to be quite a few vids with info about electric R/C conversion; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnsuRs4lEmE << B-17 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ivt_UIXFaOE&feature=related <<Mustang http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-DZJt7qzaY&feature=related <<Cessna 150 It looks as if many people have tried to make these R/C. They all seem to use the same kinda thing. Ben.

Ben Mullins
hey, I've found the article about some west wings models, basically the same as guillows i think http://www.modelflying.co.uk/news/article/mps/uan/450Ben.
Erfolg
BenI have watched a whole pile of the U Tube videos now. There have been a lot of Guillows conversions filmed, they all seem to fly fast, some had handling problems, the Corsair and Fw 190 (dived to ground). It seems you need to be a good pilot with excellent eye sight to fly and see these models. It is a pity that there are no notes on the conversions. But it does seem that a conversion is very do able. The West Wings is interesting, and more realistically priced in the UK. Guillows are about £15 (Giant Scale) in the USA.Erfolg
Ian Hoodless
Hi there Erfolg, how are you. I am also looking to convert a guillows kit ,any around 30" wingspan, probably the Stuka !!. Anyway all the inspiration you need and advice can be found on this amazing website ; www.ffscale.co.uk This is where some of the best flying model builders in the world strut there stuff at the uk indoor nationals. It is freeflight but don,t be fooled by that ,these tiny models starting at 4" wingspan ! take off fly true and land better than the real thing, and the detail ,build quality has to be seen ,check out the albatros dv at the 2008 nats menu.Trust me you will be in awe of these builders. Hope it helps Ian .
