  1. Dave, As a rule I start off with 5-6 degrees of down thrust, this generally aligns the thrust line above the vertical CG on a tractor model and also aids spin up. The effects of pitch instability are nowhere near as severe as that with a pusher as the moment arm between CG and tail surfaces are longer in comparison and dampen any offsets. You can move mass around to suit (servos, ESC, lipos etc), alter mast height and thrustline. If you are close in alignment but climb is to severe for your liking under power just simply increase the tailplane area. Or if your not up for experimenting simply copy the dimensions of a proven design.

  6. This is my 30" Scram which I flew for the first time last weekend, powered by a Redfin 020 Kompish diesel. Here is a video of one of its flights, powered backed off to try and keep it lower and closer for the camera. A full tank with a few more revs gets it to a decent height, good fun.
  7. Matty, 2 blades are more efficient, cheaper and there are less to break! They also sound better Cons are they are trickier to set up than 3 blades being more sensitive if not tackled correctly. Kind of going from a high winged trainer to a low wing aerobat.

  9. Bees, Yes, that is the correct method, it should balance horizontal or slightly nose down using the tail plane as your horizontal datum. It's worth remembering that the model should be ready to fly with the Lipo and blades installed when doing this. Rich

Test flew a 3D printed version of my Whippit Racer design today, it was gusting to 30mph but handled it well.. it features a segmented fuselage, each piece slots together dry and a piece of 6mm carbon fibre rod goes through all giving it its strength. The original was made from depron, this one has been modelled off my drawings by a gent in Australia and developed by Joe from RC Hotel. Free files to print are available over on RCG Clever stuff but I still prefer balsa bashing, a few photos I took. Rich
  13. Steve, I was just jumping off my seat trying to get it to lift off! I'm with John, more rearward tilt possibly needed. 2 blades will need at least 3 degrees more rearward tilt than 3 blades and tio weights. Also, theory says 20 degrees is the minimum rearward tilt to start autorotation so you will need this when the airframe is sat on its feet. Before making new blades it may be worth testing to see if they will spin up in a light breeze held in your hand? At least that will confirm whether the blades are worth perusing as they are.   15. It was a while ago now but I think it coincided with Nigel Hawes's 'Can Do'. It is well worth taking a look at that, plenty of excellent build logs on here if memory serves me correctly. I would think that the plan is also easy to get hold of from Sarik.
  16. Steve, I will look through my memory sticks and see if its there but I've got a feeling I didn't hang on to it due to lack of interest from the mag. I've not long joined a like minded group on FB which has renewed my interest in canards, enough to have scribbled up a new design around the same size as UnCanny, I need to transfer it from paper to CAD in the near future.   18. I have now submitted the parts drawing to Sarik Hobbies CAD man so hopefully there is a possibility of a part kit to compliment the Gyroo. Have also made a start on the 2 blade conversion, from experiments in the past I have found that a 2 blade set up needs to have a blade length about 20% extra to that of its 3 blade counterpart. For the Gyroo I will start at 600mm long and see how that works out, blanks are glued together and require profiling over the weekend. The anti strike plate goes on the bottom and is made from 2mm aluminium as it is all I had, on top of this is fibre glass plate to which the blades are bolted to. The larger holes in the alloy plate are clearance holes for the blade mount bolts and nuts, this allows the FG plate to flex up. I will get these parts finished before redesigning the back end to give me the extra clearance needed for 2 blades. Rich

  20. As promised a bit of an update, it's looking like the Gyroo could possibly make the May edition, though this would be the earliest. When I get solid confirmation of I can make up a list of materials/ electrics needed if this will help? On a side note there may be a 3D printed version available to compliment it, the prototype is in early development by a fellow Gyronut , early signs indicate that it flies equally as well as its wooden brother. I have a second model on the building board, I am thinking of making a 2 blade conversion. If there is interest in this I can scribble all the info down and make a set of drawings to compliment, just let me know? I think we may be able to upload PDF's to the new forum? Rich
  21. A couple of Panthers built and flown in Thailand by two gents. Images taken from our group on FB. Shame their flight videos aren't on youtube, they do fly them well.
  22. Andy, Essentially a rotor blade is a wing, if your mounting point is forward of the cordwise CG it can make it pitch sensitive as with a tail heavy fixed wing. This can cause tracking issues with the blades as can differing length way CG positions, this can also create vibrations throughout the head and control system. Without looking at the plan I am pretty sure I would have set the mounting hole back from the CG to compensate for covering etc, its something I've done for many years. To bring the CG back in line you could always add weight forward of the mounting hole centre (tape may work) around the cordwise CG position? Rich
