  1. weight start to become your enemy now the MVVS is 1.1Kg the DLE 20 is 820g i am not sure the performance increase will make up for the extra weight and the wing loading will only get higher and mine with a 1kilo lump of super tigre up front would be as much weight as i think the airframe could cope with and still fly nice, i have had two and if i was going to have another i would put a cooking 120 or 150 2 stroke in .... moki 150 ooohhh!
  2. I have to have a moan, i was quite excited to have a column in rcm+e about jets, but so far it has been a massive let down, this issue has really narked me off, if i was interested in a go pro i could look almost anywhere, and same for a smoke system, when starting out in turbines there is soo much to learn, tank set up, uat's rc install, to name a few instead we have stuff that has very little specifically to do with turbines, so far very very poor
  3. Just a quick note to recommend warbirds paints, absolutely brilliant to use highly recommended for spraying i use a 30% water mix with a HVLP (automotive type) airbrush and a 60% MIX with a standard dual action airbrush on a 0.5 needle, both at 40 PSI, really good coverage and so easy to use, yes you have to use a fuel proofer afterwards, but to be honest i will accept that given the lack of smell and ease of use, especially cleaning, if you need any go speak to Phil at fighter aces! ps i have no connection with them !!
  4. this always ends up the same, respected names come on and slate one power mode or another, glow is noisy and oily/messy or electric is dangerous and likely to blow up in a minutes notice !!! if you have nothing positive to say, i do wish you would button up!! both power options have pros and cons, both are brill.. personally i prefer IC, but i am grown up enough to acknowledge electric is also great, please guys if a person come on asking for some advice please be grown up about it and give impartial advice only and actually try to help the guy make an informed choice!!
  5. i just use flight modes on my 11X so if i wish to have smooth flight i flick into that mode from land mode and when i want to go nuts, then i flick into wild, i would not use a stick position switch to flick in high rates personally, as in slow knife edge where i use substantial amounts of rudder, i would not want it flicking my ailerons into high rates and making it twitchy to hold the vertical plane in the circuit !
  6. calibration engineer here! we use a company called service cal if your in the north west Unit A9 Axis Point, Hareshill Business Park, Hilltop Road, Heywood, Lancs OL10 2RQ 01706 367008 but for a nationwide provider i would use a company called Trescal find them on google it depends where you live!!
  7. nothing to do with compelled to defend just using our intelligence to actually report on what we actually find by actually OWNING what we are talking about, i am pretty sure if you read what has been written no body is actually shying away from what has happened to mintor engines in the past, and neither did Area 51, they were very honest and upfront about past problems and it was this honesty that persuaded me to purchase one, i own an MVVS, DLA, DLE, and now mintor, the DLA is the only one i have not been happy with, so again experience is what we are talking about, if the after sales is as bad as we are being told about, then this is a different matter, and again no-one is saying this is acceptable, but i re-iterate again experience of actually owning one, not regurgitating old stories
  8. just type in any of those makes in google and you get loads of "problems" there is no getting away from it Mintor has in the past had major problems, things seem to be much better now in terms of reliability if not customer service, what never helps anyone, is people who have read this and that and repeat it, as fact, it helps no one make an informed decision, i too had read all those forum posts about lost compression and rings destroying themselves, but those posts are a few years old, and that with actually talking to the uk distributor persuaded me to go for it, and so far it been a great engine. John actually states he "loves the motor" so it must not be that bad really!! les you are right the walbro carb is still part of the engine but it is not really a reflection on the reliability of the engine block, maybe Area 51 will actually come on and comment when well enough, personally my opinion is that the distributor should hold a good amount of spares or at least have a good agreement with the manufacturer that spares can be easily sourced and quickly as a customer of mintor i would be very interested in their opinion
  9. regurgitating what you have heard from other old post on forums is poor ben, but so is poor customer service, i spoke to area 51 many times before buying my mintor 38 and it has been fine for 12 months now so to come on and slag all mintor engines off is very shoddy especially when you dont own one, mintor had a few problems a few years ago and i have been assured that those problems (piston rings) have gone away, certainly mine seems good so far, as with all thing there is no such thing as perfect product, but the distributor is your only port of call, if it is within warranty they should repair or replace quickly, if not get the bits yourself and do it, i assume the reed valves are in the walbro carb and not the mintor engine !! still if the customer support is as bad as you say then they will not last long, lets hope i never have to find out!
  10. Why do you need jet A1 fuel
  11. thats exactly my point, people feel the need to put set manoeuvers in and there is no need, a beautifully flown display by a lanc is just as nice to watch as is a fully aerobatic display by an extra, club comps should be about getting people to have a go...get involved, just my opinion but when i was CD the scale comp was simple bring a scale model fly it and everyone scores, the average of all the scores wins, yes its not perfect but it was a good laugh!!
  12. i see they are no longer re-badging MVVS engines!!
  13. in club scale comps i never quite understand the reasoning behind set manoeuvres, its a club scale comp, take off fly (in a manner representing the model you are flying), land and get scored accordingly, if your flying a spit its barrel rolls, loops wingovers immelmans etc, if its an aerobatic model, then these will not do, if a person just flies straight and level with a model clearly capable of more then he should be marked down accordingly. my own experience is that set manoeuvers tend to put people off, i would rather just let people fly and score them accordingly, if someone flies straight and level in a YAK 54 then they should score far lower than someone flying a pup who does a loop, its common sense to me and it is about trying to encourage people to have a go, set manoeuvers can wait till semi serious comps. 14. you want a trad built model, thats what they were built for, pb models bullet is great for this and also great planes revolver artf is a good choice, was giving mine a good seeing to today in the wind!! although the spats take a bit of a bashing, the bullet is the one really !!
  15. if you want a build then i can recommend the DB spitfire, its a great kit and has all the servos hidden and not hanging out of the wing, which i find horrible **LINK**
  16. I love the switches, i have 5 of them and like you i have one in my capiche 140 and it is fine for this, but that is as much as i would use it in, 5 digi servos and at peak i am pulling 5 amp so i am still a little nervous, 50cc warbird so could still have 9 servos hmmm still a bit borderline!! I would be concerned.
  17. there is a big difference between a 30cc model and a 50cc model, depending on the type of model you can have 10 servos 8 of which would be high power high torque Digital servos 30Kg pull each (if it is a serious aerobatic model) most pilots of model of this standard do not want that current running through the rx it could kill it, so they dont use a switch all that current running through just one servo type lead means it tends to get warm and even a bit melted under load, i would recommend the evolution and use the six channels for the important bits and the rest direct to the rx, and use lipos or Life, unless your NimH are of the sub c type i am not sure they will be up to it
  18.   Technical Data Operating voltage 4.0V - 9.0V Power supply 2S LiPo, 2S LiFePo, 5S NiCd/NiMH Current drain Power-on state 30mA Current drain Standby 5µA Maximum load current Peak 2x4A taken from the powerbox website john !!!! and thats for the sensor switch! and yes it will happen mate as your rx will probably not cope with that kind of current, and fry the rx, and dont tell me it can't happen as i have seen it happen, that what happens when you have been flying for 20 years
  19. the problem with the PB switch is it is only 5amp, once you start into large models and multiple digital servos Hi torque then servo surges can easily exceed this some 50cc models has 2 servos per aileron one for each elevator half and 2 for the rudder all of these are 20 to 30 Kg pull servos and each under loads can in a moment pull > 1amp your powerbox switch will fry, and as the power for all of these goes through your Rx then then that will as well, if you are going down this route you really should isolate the power to the servos away from your rx and that is what you use something like an PB evolution for. if it is a serious aerobatic model a powerbox switch really is not up to it, go to the powerbox website they have a handy "which powerbox for me selector" it might help!!
  20. ps thanks for all your help and info Danny, she is coming along well and just awaiting paint now
