  1. Posted by Chris Bott - Moderator on 08/06/2014 21:33:23: Use the same cable as with Spekky Andy, works perfectly. Hello I have a brand new Phoenix and Taaranis-I am using the supplied Phoenix cable but to date have not been able to get the system to recognise the Tx...have tried setting the Tx as slave etc,but to no avail. Any suggestions, anyone?
  2. I have a brand new Taranis-purchased because I have never had a computer radio before and I decided that the (relatively) very low cost of the Taranis compared with other brands here in NZ makes it too good to go past.-cost delivered to my door, including battery and a D8/16 Rx NZ$230 vs NZ$2000+ for similar spec BIG brand Tx. My local model shop owners are ,naturally, not keen on the now bewildering variety of R/C sets (Orange etc.)available via the internet, and for my part cost is a factor, but not as important a factor as reliabilty,fail-safe,and ergonomic design.I thus left buying the Taranis for a year to monitor reliablity, manufacturing faults and so on,but to date have been able to find few reliability complaints. As a 'newbie' to computer radio, therefore,I have no pre-set expectations as to set up etc. as a Spectrum ,or Futaba user may have.Yes,using it certainly does stretch the grey matter,(at my age a good thing),and I have found that youtube carries some excellent, blow by blow articles on how to start through to advanced set-ups. I have followed the Taranis and it's various reviews on this website and have often wondered how much of the less than favourable view points are coloured to keep the advertisers happy... I think that the Taranis will eventually set a new paradigm in telemetry open source freeware is here to stay and I suspect that the big manufacturers may go the way of the British makers of old-Macgregor etc. Edited By Tiger Tim on 19/07/2014 23:46:57
  3. Hello Erfolg-(BTW , is this an anagram for Golfer? ) In answer to your first question, indeed the purpose of business is success ,measured by profitabilty...salve lucrum. The Frsky story is one of exploitation of a market need, and very successfully indeed.I agree that we seem to be arguing the same point from a different angle. The other point here is that Frsky may be the beneficiary of governmental subsidy, which would help distort the pricing ,as the 'Big Names' don't have this advantage.Nevertheless,Futaba et al had best sharpen their pencils.
  4. I live on a tight Hobby Budget and have beeen following this debate with interest,.Comparing various big name brands,(and their attendant pricing) has at times brought serious heart palpitations and a ringing in the ears. .Each brand has it's fans, and I haved no need or desire to argue the toss over each brands comparitive merits. The so called big name brands are profit driven and the sheer cost of their Rx's is ridiculous and helps maintain, wrongly or rightly, the notion that R/C flying is an exclusive pastime for the wellheeled, putting off many tyro's who might otherwise have a go. Therefore, for this bunny the Taranis hits the most 'targets' straight off-as a first time buyer I found the price more than reasonable, and 'net feedback is very positive and readily accesssible from tablet or Android device, anywhere, anytime. I have duly paid my $172-35 plus postage and am eagerly awaiting it's arrival here in NZ,and as the missus allows I will buy additional rx and other goodies.
  5. I have been buying from HK for about 3.5 years and from time to time payment problems crop up-early on I started paying via PayPal to avoid the issue MikeS is describing-(under no circumstances would I forward a copy of my Card to anyone, let alone someone from HK-I smell a very dead rat here so be careful.) The 'unpaid' issues I have had are always because I have clicked buynow, then run through the checkout process until I get the postage cost,.from time to time I have failed to delete each stage if I consider postage too high, thus incurring an 'unpaid' on my page. I have found the customer service people to be very good, but let down by a rather clunky computer purchase programme. If you are persistent with emailing them they will reply and are only too pleased to help.
  6. Hi ZKBAP, I was talking to you yesterday at Noel's shop-where are you going to do the taxi trials,I'd love to come and have a look.
  7. Amazing, mine arrived here in NZ yesterday, arrives more promptly than a letter from ChCh to Auckland...let's say that the content this issue is superior to last months ,which was wanting in many ways. Won't be building this months free plan, but the Scale ,Whittaker, various test columns, and Glider guider pages keep me happy for weeks. Hope that the appalling weather many of you seem to be suffering has not dampened your spirits- All the best TT
  8. Posted by Prop Nut on 16/01/2014 08:53:13: Sorry to see your very emphatic comment Tiger Tim. NZ was the first to offer us help in the Falklands, sending two frigates to the Indian Ocean to free-up RN ships to go South. There is still a fund of goodwill towards NZ here in the UK for that, and for your country's contribution in the two world wars. We, the people, are not the same as the politicians who took us into the European Union to our detriment, as well as yours. Many of us would like to see a re-establishment of our former relationship with the old commonwealth. Hello Prop Nut,thank you for the kind comments-we have a large community of British migrants here in Christchurch ,despite our earthquakes ,and all are very welcome. Our various leaders have found it necessary to jump into other peoples wars without any thought of the repercussions at all. There are large numbers of Kiwi men and women buried all over continental Europe and GB ,but it would seem that memories of Commonwealth contributions are very short, -especially in France, -who's Government saw fit to blow up a ship in Auckland Harbour in the 1980's! (their so-called secret agents were rapidly caught and sentenced, but our fatuous PM,David Lange, let them go) There's Gallic gratitude for you. Anyway ,our geographical position means that we are out of sight, out of mind....and you are all most welcome to come and vist,or bring your skills and come and live here.We had 32 degrees yesterday, and as I write this the sun has come up over the Pacific, the air is clean and fresh, and a new day beckons... Off to the beach for a swim, and when I get home from work, more work on the JU88 I am building
  9. Mine arrived here in NZ on 13/1/14,and like others who have posted I was somewhat bemused by the usually excellent AW column, however it all adds to lifes rich tapestry I suppose. The editorial also had me scratching my head...just what did occur in July1914;for us here the nightmare that was WW1 commenced in August 1914,but with historical revisionism rampant, who would know? Regardless NZ'ers will never again leap to the aid of the 'mother country',as 'Great 'Britain was once known as here. Still the best magazine around, keep up the great work .
  10. Hello John,I am building this model at present-amongst other projects-. I am 75% though building 'Jemima' from a free RCME mag plan ,and a depron 'Pterodactyl I have decided to build it as a C or G because I don't want to shag around with the glazed nose/gondola.My intention is to fit two equivalent size electric motors,(Turnigy G 32's) ,electric retracts ,etc.. I have pics of my build so far, which show a mock up jig, with Formers .I have settled on a simpler design, with "found" bits and pieces. I will get pics posted for for you, when I learn how to do it... All the best from New Zealand TT     Edited By Tiger Tim on 03/11/2013 05:18:17
  11. I have long struggled with creating symetrical piano wire undercarriages. Does anyone have a simple ,fool-proof method of bending this material? (I am developing a jig with bolts as posts to bend the desired shape, but am keen to find a simpler method) Perhaps RCME might like to run a series on this important topic.
  12. I am well into the construction of this aircraft-it is simple but the plan has several errors-the fuselage formers appear to be incorrectly drawn on the plan view,so it is a suck and see situation. It has been very cold here this winter,(but no snow so far),so I have dragged a building board inside and have spent many happy hours cutting and fitting. One of the things that inspired me to build it was a young guy I work with bringing me a munted ParkZone Cub-wings knackered ,firewall even worse....this bloke is a carpenter but doesn't have the skills (so he believes) to repair his model.Mindful of the series on the Seagull model, and the excellent articles on electric flight etc. running in this mag. ,I intend to rebuild it for him,and hopefully he will be encouraged to have a go himself. I also build in depron, have a few foamies ,but I am a firm believer that Balsa is best.
  13. Thank you all for your responses-have tried live chat etc.,no one home seemingly..but in the light of these answers I will persevere.
  14. Anyone else had this problem? I recently paid for two lipo batteries and a n Outrunner motor, which over here (NZ) came to the princely sum of about$71 nz ,incl. p+p. Threw this on the plastic and sat down to wait, and wait and yes more waiting. When I checked my HK a/c the purchase is listed as unpaid, tho' they have booked it to my Visa very damn quickly. Contact is a waste of time, they just don't bother to respond.   Repeated emails have gone unanswered,so this company choked me out of $70 +... anyone else had a similar experience?? 15. Or try Peter Rake's website-he has a liosting on how to build wheels, but may be able to point you to someone who can help, Cheers,Tim
  16. I have the same question, and I think the only answer is to build your own.....I recall that someone, maybe Eric Coates did a how to article in Aeromodeller ,but that would be in the 1970's. I am going to build some wheels at 90mm dia for my SE5a project-but they will bee ply discs with 12mm rubber tyres ,so the interior disc/s will be 80mm dia, with external/side discs at about 87mm +/-,will have to play around til I get it right.
  17. Hi all, have read Martins tale of woe with these clowns and must add that cheap is nasty where HobbyKing is concerned. Clearly they or their representatives are not members of the modelling fraternity-if they were they would follow chat room feedback and monitor for ongoing issues;and it is always poor service and back-up with this mob. It's your money they want, and distance makes an excellent barrier for refund-you pay to return, with no guarantee they will honour their service warrantees. As a Kiwi I am unable to purchase goods from Hk's Aust. warehouse-instead it comes from China at inflated Air China freight rates. We have three model shops here in quakeville (Christchurch),one markedly better than the others, but all have knowledgeable staff, experienced in most aspects of modelling, tho' one is heavy on toy car racing. I endeavour whenever possible to purchase from these shops-if there should be an issue it can be sorted man to man or if they don't know, they'll know someone who does. 18. Posted by GrahamC on 29/01/2013 16:40:47: CS. It is indeed an adjustable outlet. One of the features of the P51 was the ability to manage the airflow through the radiators and utilise the thrust generated by the increase in air volume due to increase in temp. This gave the P51 a slight speed advantage. I think the vent shut as speed increased and the ram air effect into the radiator increased. The Phenomenon has a name, but I can't remember it. BEB will probably know! It's known as the Meredith Effect as I recall-it did give around 5mph extra in airspeed.
