  1. Not sure if the wood connections will be as strong as they should be - the stain will impregnate the surface - and the glue will not go into the wood as it does if it is not treated. I built before any treatment, is much easier as you can sand away any irregularities - what you cannot after painting. I used one layer of sanding filler, sanded lightly and used a rapid drying paint after that. Surface is good, a satin finish, slightly shiny. VA
  2. Darran, so you will have plenty of wood - there were 2 sheets of balsa spare when I finished! and on top of that you have the material from the broken kit - time to think about the next project VA
  3. Jeff- the lawnmower was in the shed only when it stood at Bloxham - since it is in Milton Keynes I have the luxury of 2 sheds - one for the usual garden stuff plus cycles and the other one as workshop only. Also the computer is back in the house. I completely insulated the workshop (alu-plastic laminate damp barrier, 25mm styrofoam,8mm MDF) so it needs very little heating energy. But of course - condensation is a problem also here if it is not constantly heated. I am looking forward to my next shed - project VA, moved house 9 times so far, 3 different countries....
  4. Nice one Koen, Nice workshop and good machinery! I see you are using my favorite PVA (Ponal express) There will be a UK (and Europe) wide shortage of Solartex linen- as I see you are using the same stuff as I did. all the best VA   Edited By Biggles' Elder Brother - Moderator on 04/01/2014 21:02:44
  5. Poor boy - he will love uni - now I understand why student flats are in such a mess - they enjoy not to be asked to do housework Don't take it too serious and have a look into the sales - probably you find some mechanical replacement VA
  6. I would try to get replacement. Had strong vibration (caused by a slightly bent shaft after a bad landing) - the shaft broke in midair and the prop plus the housing went of and are buried in a field next to Chipping Norton (NOMAC). I could land the plane (Webbit) somehow, just bending the landing gear a bit. I had just the static part of the motor stil on the plane... VA
  7. forgotten wing plate - now you caught me.... but I am quite happy with my repair work. VA
  8. Wolston Flyer, corrosion (caused by condensation) is an issue. If you do not heat the shed you cannot avoid it. No matter if it is insulated or not. I have the problem on my lathe accessories - the lathe itself is normally protecrted with some oil, so not really an issue. And this is an apex shed, nice and rain-tight. Only way is to have a frost protector (for instance a small oil radiator), thermostate set to just 10degC. See here a picture - just taken after I moved the shed into my mini garden. Was less than one year old at that time, so I didn't leave it at my previous place. Will leave that shed with my old house, planning already for the next one... It will be a log cabin, probably from BillyOh - anybody out there with experience about their quality? VA
  9. BEB, you are not alone - but you could have easily worked around this little problem by reading what others have noticed before you. For instance Vecchio Austriaco... I left the former as it is - ripping it out without destroying everything is difficult - and changed the tail. Probably my Dawn Flyer will fly a little bit around the corner - but as I suppose it is a slow model it will not kill me to apply a bit of trim By the way - the only CNC/laser kit which I ever had that fitted perfect was the Bonanza (Jamara) - German precision - but they saved on the wood quality which was rather frustrating. So - nobody is perfect. Looking forward to your repair-solution VA
  10. Problem is I made a battery board which is glued to the bottom of the firewall former - which means it is slightly tilted downwards. I tried a flat 2450mAh Hacker battery yesterday which fits fine. But it is flat as I said - 25% longer than a normal 2200mAh. A little bit like Swiss chocolate with its alu foil and purple wrapping. And it is old - so I wonder what capacity it still holds. Probably worth doing some cycles to find out. I saw yesterday that the current engine (C3536 1000kV) has the thrust to hold the weight of the fuselage with a 10x7 prop, but it gets rather warm doing so. Of course static running doesn't show the real behaviour, and nobody will climb forever. But having seen the weight issues and having to order a new ESC I ordered also the next bigger engine (D3542 1000kV) - saves me the postage in case I need it later. And I also ordered a replacement engine for the Webbit - the last one had some vibration issues and broke into 2 pieces during flight - makes landing an experience....) so I have minimum 2 of the mass build planes ready for Greenacres 2014. VA
  11. ok, it is the speed controller which is broken. Need to send some money to HK... Have to be quick - with the speed BEB is building he might be in the air earlier than I am VA
  12. Not bad, you started the New Year with full speed Just a small hint - probably not too late. I have finished my Dawn Flyer - and it suffers slightly from COG problems (tail heavy) . I have seen you packed a lot of power into the nose - so this will help for sure - but I have also the battery problem. I cannot move the battery as far forward as I want to as there is not enough room between the battery hatch and the battery holding plate. In the early stage you are now you could probably think about the final battery position. With my model I will do some Dremel surgery to get the battery in a higher position... VA, back to work ...
  13. All good, they want to be stored at low temperatures. before using them you need to have them at room temperature otherwise you will not have the full capacity available. I normally have a warm water bottle in my box to keep them on room temperature. (same thing you use for cooling in the summer, the blue flat containers filled with a cold mixture - available in outdoor stores or supermarkets) VA
  14. I am almost there. With a few hick-ups. First the engine doesn't work properly, have to find out if it is the engine or the esc. It doesn't know which direction to run - I have all 3 cables securely connected. It doesn't get to high speed and the speed controller gets warm. (Turnigy plush 40). I have other engines and other speed controllers to test, but what I have selected was the best fit of all parts I found in my bits box. Building has finished, except the front grill (couldn't find a proper grill material. Have some flower decoration netting in mind) Also the magnets for the battery hatch are not in place. Undercarriage is complete and painted black (as there was corrosion - probably from the flux) I put some effort into the pull-pull, unfortunately I found only a blue arm. Probably some paint can improve that.     The pilot (1/8 scale) was a bargain but could be a bit taller, I elevated him 6mm so he can see something. The windscreen was once a CD case. I found some nice hooks in an arts and crafts shop, originally in use for glass beads. Works well with the hat elastic, which I fixed using needle and tread. The next surprise came when I put the plane on the COG device - should be approx 50 but we are at 75mm! Battery is a 1800, there is not enough room under the hatch to go totally into the front. So probably there is some surgery necessary as I am not a fan of the church roof material. Of course I ordered some wood props, which will not help with the COG. Probably I change the engine for a bigger (and heavier) one. Have a Hacker A30 10L without home, but probably that is too powerful (almost double in comparison with the engine which is on the plane now). Also I think about a name label and a registration number. That's it for now. Happy building! VA   Edited By Vecchio Austriaco on 30/12/2013 20:07:22
  15. Used a tray in the 80th, was a simprop SAM-FM plus the original simprop tray, and with the long 35MHz antenna the tray was of some advantage. liked it especially when lauunching gliders as you don't need to hold the transmitter and can concentrate on the controls. Also it had compartments for small tools - very usefull as you have them all the time with you. Now I use a neckstrap, especially as the transmitter has controlls on the bottom it is difficult to find the correct tray. VA
  16. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! looks like we have a lot of perfect building weather this christmas VA
  17. A nice way to reduce the cabling mess. Will pay off when you have to close just one connector (hopefully with security screws still don't see them) VA
  18. Had the stylus some years ago, but charging was a lottery game. Also there was not enough power for the everyday tasks. So one day I forwarded it to the bin department and bought myself a 3000. The 3000 is a nice tool, I am not totally happy with the speed regulation, we are in 2011 (when I bought it) - there could be a better solution! The main point of critics is the power lead - using a H05VV-F (PVC insulation and PVC sheath) of poor Chinese quality makes it a perfect spring when the temperatures are going down. I know power tools need to have power cords of a certain quality and insulation thickness but the extra price to make this power cord in rubber (H05RN-F or H05RR-F) would have made a few people much happier (Everybody who works in a shed which isn't always on 23 deg C...). So all in all I am happy with it, but the cheap cable takes some of the fun away. VA, cable department
