  1. We are going to have a winter 'Mass build' at my club and so far we have 6 members that have signed up, we are going to build 'The Ohmen'. In the spirit of being 'Green' does anyone have a copy of the plan that they would be willing to post? Cost of postage paid of course. I could go along to the local copy shop and have a run of 6 printed but would rather use a plan that has already been printed if possible.

I throw my hat into the 'Pro Life' ring, I have 5 models that use these as the RX power source and have never had any issues, even after months of storage they are still full and once in use the RX/Servo's seem to drain them far less than when they were NiMh powered........ probably due to the higher voltage. On the first few models I used a 6A diode to drop the voltage down to approx. 6 volts but the last 2 models I haven't bothered and the servo's haven't suffered any ill effects, if you are using HV servos then there is nothing to worry about anyway. I have made up a charge lead using a multiplex connector which enables me to balance charge them whilst they are still fitted into the model..... unlike LiPo's they are not volatile and there is no need to remove them during charge.   4. Thank you Rob, I am going to download some software whilst I am waiting for it to arrive. How would you go about getting a plan onto your pc? I have an A4 scanner which will be ok for smaller ribs and formers but large wing ribs or a fuselage side will be too big for my scanner. Would a print shop be able to scan a plan and turn it into a pdf? Also for something like a long fuselage side that is too big for the engraver is there a simple way of adding some sort of finger joint in the software to join / align 2 pieces of wood together such as in this picture?

I bought one of these off Gumtree a couple of months ago with several rolls of vinyl, so far I am very pleased with it and have cut a few decals for my models, I also cut out the words and picture to go on a sign for my local model club. As was already said setting up is very easy, there are also some great tutorials on YouTube that show how to do various different things. I would be happy to share any files or ideas.

I was recently messing around on my lathe and decided to have a go at making a magnet ring for another petrol conversion that I have in the pipeline, the one that Morris sells costs about £30 (I wonder how much of this is because it is anodised?), it is basically just a ring that fits over the prop driver with a magnet and 2 grub screws. I knocked one up for about £2 inc the magnet, I also made a fuel plug from scrap. I reckon I can get the bits together for around £78, this is £2 for the magnet ring and bracket, £38 for the ignition unit and sensor, £25 for the carb (RCGF), £4 for a sheet of phenolic to make a carb heat spacer and £9 for the 1/4-32 spark plug.
  8. As the Precedent Turbulent was mentioned I thought I'd post a video of mine, it has an SC 1.20 converted to run on petrol. It hasn't been without problems but this was mostly because I was trying to use the original glow carb to start with, the needle was just too sensitive to be able to adjust it properly or get it running reliably. I have since bought the carb kit from Morris which I believe is an RCGF carb, it is now running much better and I have over 40 flights on this setup, it runs on a 25:1 oil mix (4%). **LINK** You will see in the video I am using an Evolution 16x6 prop and I'm getting 7800-7900 rpm at full throttle and around 1850 rpm at idle, this may be slightly less than on glow but I doubt by very much, and certainly not enough to worry about on this type of model. BTW I still have glow engines (Laser and others) so I am not saying petrol is better in all circumstances, here is a list of the pro's and con's (so far) CON's The cost of the parts Maybe a slight drop in rpm at full throttle It ran hotter so I had to add cowl baffles PRO's Cheap fuel, around £7 a gallon, it also uses less than 1/2 the amount so it's 1/4 of the price Easy starting, less equipment, all I need is model, TX and starter (it will hand start) Low reliable tickover Absolutely no exhaust mess, so no cleaning No fiddling with the mixture, I haven't touched it for around 35 flights

  12. I would expect a 26cc petrol to have a similar power output to a 1.20 glow 4 stroke (20cc). I have a CRRC 26cc in a model although I haven't flown it for some time, fitted with a 17x8 to try to keep the noise down a bit as the silencer doesn't exactly do much silencing, it has been very reliable but is not exactly a powerhouse.
  13. Thanks for the replies so far..... a couple of people have said about the cowl. When I got the model there was just a large hole in the front, with the engine clearly visible. I decided to 3d print a dummy engine fan to make it look more scale, I thought that this would also limit some of the airflow into the cowl as there could have been too much. I wonder if this is upsetting the carb? The engine ran fine on the ground with this, but didn't have any airspeed Edited By chris larkins on 25/05/2019 22:08:01
  14. I recently bought a second hand Black Horse FW-190, it was fitted with all servos, battery x 2 and an NGH 25cc petrol. It was minus any retracts so I have fitted some E-flite units with Hobbyking oleos. I fitted a 16x10 wooden prop to try to keep the revs & noise down, all was well until just after lift off when the engine died suddenly with not much runway remaining, damage was limited to a broken prop, bent axles and a split retract mounting. Flight no.2, the retract mounting was repaired, tank filled with fresh fuel, a tube was soldered into the hole on the diaphram plate and a line run into the fuselage (just in case airflow in the cowl was upsetting the carb). A 16 x 6 prop fitted and with a tweak of the high speed needle I was getting almost 900rpm more than before with plenty of pull...……….. Take-off was smooth but a little bit higher this time the engine died again, damage this time is a little more with a cracked cowling, broken spark plug and both retract mountings pulled out of the wing. I have checked the tank and all appears to be well and it is fitted with a felt clunk (one suggestion was that if it had a normal clunk fuel frothing could have caused it. Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? Repairing the model is not the end of the world but is it going to happen again the next time round? On the ground it appears to run lovely, during the noise test it was on full throttle for some time with no hesitation. Edited By chris larkins on 24/05/2019 15:40:18
  15. To me that looks like a 'Detroit Custom Cruiser' made by Powerplanes International. I had one as my first model, powered by an O.S LA 46, I passed my 'A' test with it.
  16. I thought after all the negative stuff that I have read about Hobbyking customer service I would share a positive story. Last week I was setting up my Durafly Vampire PNP, the battery had been plugged in for around 5 mins whilst I was setting up the control surfaces, without even getting as far as running up the fan there was a crack and a puff of smoke coming from the ESC, I quickly disconnected it & upon further inspection it was as dead as a dodo. I had a spare ESC from another project and used this to get the model in the air. I thought for a few days about complaining to Hobbyking but thought it would be a waste of time, then after a few days I thought what have I got to lose. I filled out the form on the website explaining what had happened, submitted a photo of the dead ESC and requested that they send me a replacement. Today I got a knock on the door ( 3 days later) and upon opening the box I found a replacement ESC, perhaps they didn't have the original in stock as the one they have sent me is the upgraded AeroStar WiFi model. They haven't even requested that I send the original ESC back to them. So for once a positive message about Hobbyking.........
