Just had the maiden flight today, calm and sunny (after the fog cleared!). Mine weighs in at 5.3lbs and powered by the Overlander T4260/06 (recommended by Sussex Model Centre when they couldn't supply the recommended Quantum motor). The model was coming out somewhat tail heavy, so I would recommend a 'heavy' brushless motor the Overlander weighs in at 264grms - ideal as no extra weight needed at the nose. No trimming required on the maiden (bit of a non-event really - thankfully!). I wasn't sure on the power measured with my watt meter (4 cell, 400W with 14x10 APC prop and around 25 amps, so plenty of headway with my installed 60 amp ESC) - ideally I would have preferred around 500W, but plenty of thrust, good enough for me. Loops from straight and level and bunts were good. Not tried vertical performance yet and I can always prop up to a 15 inch prop, but would need to increase wheel size to achieve a reasonable clearance on our grass strip. Having been used to a Riot (foamie) for the last 3 years, the Wotty comes into land at a fair rate of knots (calm day, so a bit of wind should help slow it down) compared to the Riot which just floats in. But I did want a heavier model that copes with higher winds and this should do the trick. Very pleased with it. --- (apart from the fiddly push-pull rudder linkage - that was a bit of a pain to set up) ARC - spinner size appears to be 55mm.

Thought I'd report back now I've flown my Red Eagle (several times) over the last few days of fine weather we've been having in the UK. BEAUTIFUL! Really pleased with performance and managed to find a few thermals today. Motor a little too powerful (goes vertical on full throttle!) and I will mix in a little 'down' elevator on throttle to compensate. Off power glide is superb. Thanks Ton for a great plan and model. Will fit a little keycam next to record my flights. -

Max Thrust Riot battery size

Since I bought mine (18 months ago), I think the battery area has been increased in the newer ones. I have had over 100 flights on the stock setup, no probs, apart from the rudder not been glued in securely on receipt. Suggest you check that before you maiden! I have read that others suffered this issue. Happy landings, I've been pleased with mine! oh, one other thing, I've replaced the wheel bolts with stronger ones-the original ones were a little too bendy for my landings! steve -
Hi Chris, thought you might like to know I've repaired my Whizkid and replaced the original carbon rod with a more rigid one (as per your plan!). I had a spare rod lying around and previously used that, but it proved too flexible in flight (caused the tail to twist) and that's why I had the splat! goes really well now, straight up on WOT and I find it great fun for little cost. Thank you! steve

You can buy older versions of Photoshop Elements from places like Amazon very cheaply. For example, version 7 can be bought for around £25, which is a bargain. I believe the current version is v12, but not a lot different from older versions. Lots of tutorials on YouTube. Gimp, although free is IMHO, more difficult to use than Photoshop Elements. As other posts remark, depends on what you intend to do...... steve

Thanks for responses guys. I will repair/rebuild with a slightly thicker tube and see how that goes. Oh the pleasures of aero modelling!. I remember when I first built my Mercury Matador, freeflight model,many,many years ago. I launched it and it flew away, never to be seen again!....... Hi fellas, had the maiden flight today. Flew away well from hand launch on half throttle. A little nose up, but some down trim sorted that. I turned across wind and seemed to lose control and splat! (wind speed about 8mph) Some damage but repairable and all electrics working ok. I did wonder tho about the tail feathers at the end of that carbon tube - the tail has a lot of flexibility (ie flexing) and wondered if my tube is too flexible, allowing the tail to flex too much in flight. My carbon tube is 6mm dia, (5mm internal) and is 15.5 inch long from end of fuz to tail, as that's what I already had in my stock, should I be using a thicker one? What have you other fellas used?

At last, I've finished my WhizKid... 16oz with a 3 cell 1300 lipo, 1400kv motor, 7x4 folding prop. Just measured watts: 133W and 11.2A, so should be fine with my 20A ESC. - Not as much as I'd hoped, but I'm sure plenty of power to start with. I can look at different props to increase power (if necessary!) My first build from plans for a long time - really enjoyed building this - (thanks Chris) hope the maiden goes well . A little challenging to get the aileron servos and elevator servo linkages to not clash, but worth the effort. Once the weather has settled down again, will let you all know how it went.............. Hi Andy, thanks for tip re red paint. I've had my Riot about 18 months now and had a lot of fun with it, tho the red paint around the nose looks a bit tatty! This model got me back into the hobby after a layoff of around 10 years and it's doing that job nicely. Just a note about the fin - please check its glued securely into the fuselage, mine was not - in fact it almost came adrift during the first few flights and a think I've seen a few other posts re this potential fault. Good luck with the maiden!
