Ive run ic for years with glows but found they work best as an emergency option and not when starting etc as they could be a tad erratic and unpredictable. i got bit when i forgot i had one armed and flicked the prop. If you need a very low tick over for landing , they are worth setting up on a flick switch rather than through the throttle which also drains the battery dead fast.
  3. Pat, I was always encouraged to have a model fly so the controls appear at neutral whilst in level flight . Adding elevator trim is fine in practice but always looks a fudge . Apart from that your wrote right!

  5. Ive flown vintage for years and the incidence set up is designed to be variable. I can fly with the standard trim for calm days and add a shim to the tail LE if its windy to reduce the rate of climb. Ive never shimmed the wing as its takes away some of the charm of the design and results in a sports model. Remember: Throttle is for altitude, elevator is for speed.
  6. Sebart are so light they are capable of 3d but not to the extent you can go mad. Extreme flight are popular for both but you need to be very careful with the landings as they are fragile. The angel was great and in my view better than the wind s. Stronger and slightly lighter. Most 60 sized ( 5-6 cell) models will also be dependent on the weather and won't like a breeze. i would recommend the angel with a 6 cell set up. Dumfries Models import them and they won't disappoint.
  7. Agreed. I just tried the site and the lipo search function. The results suggest HK have no 3 cell lipos ! lol! Seriously poor . I can just about weather the appalling exchange rate but now its a real chore just to find the stuff I know should exist. And were supposed to be entering into a trade deal with these half wits!

  9. The reality with all the proposed EASA changes is that there will be on one to enforce these new laws. Unless you endanger people or property, fly in the vicinity of an airport or city or film an MP doing something they shouldn't , the chances are that the police will simply note it as they would occasional nuisance crime.

  11. Same here except all the old farts who fly during the day mow the patch for me to fly in evening! I in return don't fly during the day or ask how there pension fund is going given brexit!
  12. Chris, I think we lead such busy involved lives now that clubs will struggle to get a significant number of members out to a specific event. To expect a higher turnout is probably unrealistic, so 25 is excellent! Domt think people choose not to attend, they probably just cant. The best idea is for a club to provide excellent club facilities and let the flyers find ways of enjoying themselves.
  13. THe concept that a club is like a commune and we all give and take to make it work is one that always makes me laugh. The truth is we mix with and spend time doing what we prefer with the people we prefer. Some club members prefer to meet up and chat, some just want to fly. Groups form within the club, people seek similar minded flyers out etc. We all exist and have fun . Any attempt by a club to socially engineer peoples behaviour such as an event etc is normally doomed as it forces members to go against there preferences . My club has 1 agm and a few summer club nights which having been to a few are dire. Power point presentations done by retired folk. We now just have a portable bbq at the site and post for people to come and have a burger and fly on a particular day.   14. Well puy erflog. Over many years of night riding, i did manage to ram into 2 walkers and a jogger, both completely invisible with no lights. i was lit up like a christmas tree. There was simply no way anyone could say they didn't see me. One benefit of the flashing lights is that drivers are automatically drawn to them as they are completely different to normal lights you see on the road bar emergency services. You can't help but see them.
  15. Gents, what you all need is a13 year old son. He understands these processes and navigates fast food ordering like its , well childs play. I feel honoured to enter the world of grumpiness as like you lot, i do question what intellectual value a 17 year old sales assistant is going to bring to my subjective assessment . Always ask the advice of the oldest assistant you can find as there less likely to tow corporate lines and may be less pushy.

Ive just ordered a set of lights from mtb batteries having seen a pair in use. http://www.mtbbatteries.co.uk/mountain-bike-lights/ You want to look for the new XML U2 led bulbs which are very powerful and if combined with a lithium ion battery, give astonishing run times. Mine cost just over £100 for a set but they do others . 2000 lumens power is like a car at full beam. commuting is fine with 500-800 in light streets but not in dark country lanes. Good lights also get noticed by drivers!
  17. Chris, Im well aware of the CAA rules and reciprocal schemes in Europe, but in this case they failed. Someone didn't do there job or the model in question wasn't designed properly.
  18. A big problem we have in this hobby is the lack of testing done , esp with regards bigger models. Most full size designers can either calculate stress loads or conduct destructive testing of a design to ensure it meets specific wing loading limits or g ratings.etc One off unique designs like the Grippen are probably built using sound model building ideas but do not get the same level of performance scrutiny. Did the pilot have any idea of its limits ? Was it G rated ? Did he know of any traits of the full size that would explain the accident? Its not until its flown that we see if it works . Many bigger models only get flown at such events so you are therefore seeing a design being put hroughi its early flights in reality. Steve Carrs recent crash at Blackbushe was the same , if I recall. Id prefer to see all large models over 20kg subject to a tough series of flight schedules away from the public. Not perfect but at least this crash would have been away from the public.
