  1. Managed to cyano my glasses onto my head. Put a big new molded glider together in the lounge. Lifted one wingtip without realising the other was under the sofa. Crunch. Four aborted takeoffs before I remembered you take off INTO wind, not downwind. Explained the giggling form 'mates'though. Setting fire to the carpet with molten lead, panicking and trying to put it out with Cyano kicker. Believing the person who told me you can pour molten lead into a glider nose. You can't.
  2. Great write up! Thank you everso much once again. Really sorry I couldn't be there this weekend, I'm waiting for a cataract op, and have now had to stop flying temporarily. Things will be much clearer in 2018 though 😀
  3. Thank you all so much for sharing your experiences, it's been very interesting and encouraging ! As I'm short sighted anyway, I'm told I could have near vision lenses. I would need glasses for distance, but will be able to read (and build models!) without specs. These astigmatism lenses that were mentioned are very interesting too, looking into that ! Cheers guys, Scott
  4. I'm would be really interested in anyones experience of having cataract surgery, and its effect on flying models? I'm waiting to have mine done, and have now had to stop flying as I'm simply not safe. Often when flying gliders, particularly in bright sunlight, they would just turn into fuzzy blobs If you've had cataract surgery, what lenses did you choose? How long was it before you could fly again? Any problems or different choices you would make? Any personal experience very much appreciated. Cheers, Scott
  5. I've got a big home-made Spit with a Laser 180 single in it. It's 88" ish, so similar to the DB. I was going to put my 240V in it, but cooling and carb access would have been tricky, so I went for the 180 Single instead which is bombproof. It's mounted inverted, and a hole in the cowl beneath it cools it perfectly. A 'long' Laser exhaust pokes nicely out of the cowl as you can see below. A long inverted run leaves a glorious smoke trail. It works beautifully, excellent match and sooooo much nicer than a petrol 2 Stroke. I built it as lightly as I could, and it came out at 19lbs including 12oz of nose ballast. That's really the upper AUW limit for acceptable performance as Jon says. Really keep it light as light as possible.
  6. Is anyone else out there building one of these ? I've started doing one for PSS, wondered if anyone else has one on the go to compare notes with ?
  7. Jon, please stop posting pornographic images on a Thursday afternoon. It's not good for ones constitution don't you know
  8. We made it onto page 16 of the North Wales Pioneer no less ! Somewhere between a dog nicking a kids ice cream, and a lost cat. The picture of me isn't actually me, and apparently I'm from Windsor, but heck ! All publicity is good as they say http://html5.pagesuite-professional.co.uk/default.aspx?pubname=North%20Wales%20Pioneer&pubid=4e24e06c-c981-405e-9ef0-f1c3aec8f4fc
  9. Oh my word ! So it is ! Well spotted. Will I be drummed out of the PSSA 😃 I shall write 500 lines, say 50 Hail Marys and self flagellate for a week 😆
  10. Thank you all for your kind comments ! I'm pleased to say its now flown ! We were blessed with 40mph winds at the August PSSA Meeting last weekend up the Orme. Borderline too windy for it, but it had to be done ... It went surprisingly well ! CG and all throws seem fine, only one flight as I stripped a servo but all good ! Photos by the insanely talented and legendary Phil Cooke himself:
  11. Wow ! What a fantastic in flight shot ! That's getting printed and framed ! Enormous thanks to Phil and Tim for organising such a great weekend. I was utterly chuffed to bits to get a the Ron Collins Trophy for the Hunter, to win something that has previous winners names on like Matt Jones and John Hey on is just bloody brilliant, so kind of you all. I grinned all the way home, and even rang me 'mam up to tell her Edited By Scott Edwards 2 on 21/08/2017 12:18:11 Edited By Scott Edwards 2 on 21/08/2017 12:18:36
  12. That will be fine, but ideally raise the tank a smidge so the centre line of the tank is in line with the centre of that big black hole that sucks the air in.
  13. Just stick the centre of the tank roughly level with the carb intake and you'll be fine. There's no black magic to it, and as long as you don't tell it, a Laser doesn't care if it's upside down back to front or sideways.Edited By Scott Edwards 2 on 18/08/2017 21:33:33
  14. Staying in Llandudno tonight, so checked out The Cottage Loaf. There's a Pay & Display car park right next to it. Result ! Free after 6pm too. Turn left by The Palladium, down Garden Street, and boom. Use SatNav postcode LL30 2DD. PS. It's windy.
  15. I've had success using Cline regulators on Lasers - but I wouldn't recommend them. I had a 240V in a big F3A Pattern model, I wanted to stick the tank on the CG, so used a bladder tank, pressurized by one exhaust, feeding two Cline regulators, one to each carb. It was a faff, a right pain, but it did work. The Clines themselves only have tiny connections and the fuel tube kept coming off. Getting all of the air out of the system after each flight was a pain, and all the flippin pipework everywhere was confusing. Eventually all of the chrome plating inside the Cline regulators peeled off and they packed up. The Clines are not made anymore as far as I know, and were damned expensive for what they were. A similar thing is sold by "Iron Bay Models" though I think. But - don't do it. It's not worth the hassle. Find a way of rotating the engine or moving the tank so it's closer.
  16. Ooooooh !!! The Lancaster just flew over my house in Aylesbury Buckinghamshire ! It was heading south. I've checked on the BBMF website, and it's at Blackpool Airshow tomorrow ? It's based in Lincolnshire, so what the blazes was it doing down here at 2pm this afternoon ? Fabulous to see though, I was running around the garden waving and whooping like a six year old
  17. Wonderful to hear Ernie is still flying. I remember the discussions he and I had at shows and in the shop bemoaning the state of modelling ! I retired my Fleet gear long long ago now, but still have the odd Fleet Servo in things. Ernie had the most spectacularly hairy ears that I've ever seen ! I hope he's kept that up
