The March 2025 edition of RCM&E arrived through my letterbox a few days ago but I have only just picked it up today. Starting as I usually do with the 'Welcome' page by Kevin Crozier I realised that I was struggling to read it. The font seemed to have shrunk or could it be my specs? I checked against the February edition and yes the font has shrunk so perhaps my eyesight has not suddenly got worse. Maybe the reason is to force us to go for an electronic version where we can expand the font on screen. Is the printed magazine due to become extinct any time soon? I hope not.

Cutting a motor shaft to shorten it.
Bill Wood replied to Bill Wood's topic in General Electric Flight Chat
Thanks all for the input especially Ron's helpful video. I will use Ron's method and seal up with tape before cutting. I'm too tight to buy another shaft - I'm a Yorkshireman! Also I have removed shafts in the past and had problems with circlips as I don't have the right tools. -

For externally mounted motors I prefer the "modern" way that motors have a prop driver bolted to the case. The shaft extending the other side allows for the motor to be mounted internally with a "conventional" prop driver. -

Many thanks Andy. That's good advice. I was concerned about steel dust getting to the magnets. The motor is a 4max 3535. -
I have a brushless motor where the shaft will extend into the fuselage. Has anyone cut a motor shaft, for instance with a dremel type cutting disc? The shaft diameter is 5mm. See Photo.

I'm not a BT customer. Virgin media have put fibre connections outside all houses on my street. I'm not a Virgin customer either. We still use the land line and mobiles. No company has said I need to change anything. Virgin have tried to sell me a package but I'm waiting until they start giving them away. My NOW router works fine for streaming films etc. I'm waiting until I'm forced to go full fibre whenever that may be. PS my smart meter has worked fine for many years now.

So called " Driving aids" on new cars , help or hinderence ?
Bill Wood replied to Engine Doctor's topic in Chit-chat
I find lane assist on my Skoda Kamiq is positively dangerous. When pulling out to pass a horse or cyclist the lane assist jerks the steering wheel back towards whatever I am passing. I know if indicate right then the assist is temporarily turned off but who signals when there's no other traffic around? I can disable lane assist by a minimum of 3 button pushes on 3 different steering wheel buttons to return to the same dash display that I was on, however it will default to on again each time I start the engine. That also applies to stop/start except to disable that is just one button on the centre console. Lane assist may be of use on dual carriageways or motorways if the driver is falling asleep! Also it's useless on wet roads that are reflecting the sunlight. I think it's all just to boost the NCAP rating. -

What size battery will you use and will it go in the front hatch? Nice job. Much better than my first foray into foam board.

I thought multiplex models are "elapor" which is EPO foam not EPP ?

Thanks Denis but Clearview RC appears to only work with windows.

Thanks Dick, Stephen and Martin for your info. So far I have only managed to download PicaSim to my android smartphone. It's not ideal but I will see where I can go from here.

Does anyone know of a model flight simulator that will work on a linux based laptop and ubuntu or with google chrome? I got fed up with windows and ditched it last year. My old version of Real Flight only worked with windows and probably the same goes for newer versions of Real Flight. Has anyone used a model flight sim on a linux platform or with google chrome?

Thanks Guys. I will sleep tonight. Wikipedia has it right - it should be trailing edge flaps hence your reference to flaperons. Phew!

I have recently received my October 2021 issue of the magazine. The quality of the pictures and photos just seems to get better. One thing is puzzling me regarding the article on the superb scale model of the Fairy Flycatcher: It mentions that, quote " She had flaps that run full span on the leading edges of both her wings" unquote. Now I have done some serious looking at the photos but I fail to see these flaps. Everything has been included in this magnificent model, so why can't I see leading edge flaps and I keep coming back for a second look? I'll not sleep tonight unless I can find out what I'm not seeing. Somebody please help!
