  1. 41 for me mostly by not selecting the obvious wrong ones
  2. TP there is a club here but I've only ever seen guys there on Sundays. And as I work in the mining Industry days off don't always fall on weekends There is a few large salt lakes local With huge thermals as seen by watching the eagles soaring they tend to turn into whirly whirlies though especially close to the ground which has already done for one of my models.got picked up by one just after the most perfect landing I've ever done. I'm now practicing landing as close to me as possible.I'm building an electric glider at the moment. to try and get amongst the thermals I do a lot of driving for work to very remote areas and would like something easily transportable for a sneaky fly. Plans are afoot just need to sort out details .Cheers Vince.
  3. Not quite John born in Sedgefield County Durham moved to Thornaby in 1969 .Spent a lot of time in The North Yorkshire Moors as a kid. Got three younger brothers Dad thought that running around in the fresh air was a good way to tire us out Did the Like wake walk numerous times first time I was about 11 I think Cheers Vince
  4. Just to add to the above started in 1972 at the age of 8 Dad bought me a KK robin for xmass and we built together well he built I just helped. Didn't fly very well too heavy red doped fuselage and awful plastic prop didn't help.Next model was a KK caprice, beautiful flyer had it for years, built this one myself took ages with lots of input from Dad.Next came a competitor was ok with plastic prop but only just then a Gypsy wonderful thing built light with a semi finished balsa prop in the kit. lesson learned carved a balsa prop for the Competitor was now 11 years old transformed the model. would now rog and climb to great height. lost it oos twice was returned as address and phone no was written on model, Dads suggestion after seeing it fly with the balsa prop.Made patterns of all the parts and rebuilt it thee times from the plans. At this time we lived in the north of England Thornaby to be exact moved to South Africa in 1981 and came to Oz in 2007.Had a KK Halo at about 14 years old First with a testors 049 couldn't get it to start at the field. was talking to the owner of my lms about when buying fuel was the Modeldrome in Middlesborough .He gave me a second hand paw 1cc diesel to try for free had to pay for the fuel though he was kind enough to show me how to start it this was a revelation to me and had lots of flights with it on tho north Yorkshire Moors until I spilled a lot more fuel into the fuselage than I realised and the d/t fuse set fire to it In the air saw it all happen was probably about 80 feet high directly overhead the fuse burned through the rubber band which flicked around and stuck to the undercarriage the wind fanned the ember to a small flame the rest is history gave the engine to my cousin when we left for SA wonder if he still has it . Anyway onto the present day love reading build blogs will do one someday like Peter Millers designs and Tim Hoopers will build one someday Have spare electric set ups but I cant help thinking that a Ballerina with a paw rc diesel would be worth a try will do a blog on that. Cant get diesel fuel in lms guy laughed at me when I enquired said Diesels for model aircraft didn't exist will buy engine and mix my own fuel as I can get ether from cold start canisters for large diesel engines.Have done some research on interweb .Wonder if synthetic oil is a suitable replacement for castor in a paw .Maybe John Harper would have an idea Some research and experimentation in the near future is a strong possibility will post results as and when ttfn Vince.
  5. Hi guys have been lurking for some time decided recently to sign up. Started back into modelling a couple of years ago had quite steep learning curve in the beginning. Especially with the equipment available these days took me a while to discover HK and other online shopping choices , bought some stuff off ebay initially with varied results. First motor esc combo was pretty good although came without instructions three wires between motor and esc was unexpected . I connected everything up to try it out . had bought a really cheep four channel 2.4 g radio set cant remember make its now in the bin .Also instructions translated from Chinese to English may as well have been written in Arabic connected receiver plug from esc to batt port in receiver three wires to motor as best guess connected battery to esc and waited three short beeps from motor plus one long one nothing mounted in plane yet motor screwed to plank and clamped in bench vice advanced throttle stick nothing from motor . disconnected and reconnected everything and tried again this time motor seemed to be trying to turn both ways at once swapped two wires to motor same result swapped other two wires and guess what smoke came out of esc .Sent esc back to supplier with description of what I had done with a request to purchase another as I had obviously done something wrong but didn't know what received new esc free of charge with advice to connect esc cable to throttle port in receiver. Have since aquired watt meter and other stuff .Love this hobby .Although I enjoy building more than flying its a great way to pass time and much more productive than watching telly I live in Kalgoorlie WA and don't get much time off work when the weather is flyable but the shed and the latest project is always there .Have amassed a small fleet of electric planes including a Junior 60 and a KK Scorpion which is my avatar interesting one this as I downloaded the plan from outerzone . As the answer but got two plans in the file the answer and build article which was an amusing read and a 50 inch span KK scorpion Scorpion showing two channel radio and ritz wing construction wich I built Using a home made jig Flies really nice in light winds .Was unsure about the undercamber but it works well ,enough for now Cheers Vince
  6. Was looking for the sort of foam Chris used for his wingtips which is why I posted on here, was thinking that with his experience in composites he might know of an alternative. Will keep looking but for the moment its not a show stopper. Going to site for a few days tomorrow will start a build blog when I get back but am part way into the build of an own design electric glider so cant start from the beginning. Sorry for hijacking your thread Chris cheers Vince
  7. Andrew.tried acetone will clean it off your hands etc. before its dried but only sort of softens the surface slightly until it evaporates when set tried various industrial solvents with similar results including spray gun cleaner which dissolves all types of dried paint from nozzles etc.need to find insulation foam or similar. But live in western Australia and fibreglass insulation is most commonly used here don't want order a small trial block online as probably not worth the cost for an experiment. Don't find bits in builders skips as it is not used here planking with balsa works well just wanted to try something different to see if its easier or cheaper stronger or lighter.I don't have a huge modelling budget so things need to be easy to get hold of and cheap. Chris here's an adage concerning tools I'e you can never have enough its better to be looking at it than be looking for it cheers Vince
  8. Hallo Chris .I've been reading this blog with interest since the start I build like you do in fits and starts and spend lots of time in the shed looking and thinking and planning I'm also keen on trying for me new methods materials and techniques I wanted to try using lost foam moulding for my latest build bit couldn't find a suitable foam locally so tried making a block of gap filler but couldn't find anything that would dissolve it so finished up planking with balsa came out ok. I'll cut the block up to make a build frame or jig or something and probably find that acrylic paint dissolves it and sticks it to my plane. My kind of luck if it rained women Id catch my mother in law. Any way just wondering if building from depron and composites as you are and then covering with glass and resin would be any stronger or lighter than traditional methods I appreciate very well it will toughen the surface and make it more resistant to hangar rash etc I like using 6mm square cf tube from hk as wing spars and thin sheet aluminium for motor mounts and local reinforcing basically using what I can get that I think is fit for purpose. Have to buy balsa from local hardware chain store and be very selective which oftentimes amuses other customers as local hobby shop doesn't sell balsa next nearest hobby shop is 600 kilometres away. brave of you to post a blog and carry on enjoying this hobby in your own way.the way I think is this is my hobby Ill enjoy it in my own way and put as much in as I can and get as much out as I can and If I can Help others along the way all good If others can help me all good. you have some very interesting ideas some of which Ill try myself sorry for the long post and hope I haven't hijacked your thread looking forward to seeing your ballerina finished excellent work so far hope it flies as well as it will look and not if like my efforts my planes ability to fly is better than my ability to fly it cheers Vince
  9. I have built 5 planes from plans downloaded from outerzone, excellent resource I think, also spend a lot of time perusing the site and this forum, only just joined this forum though I have been lurking for some time. Some excellent information and help with stuff when needed .Although I did once send a thank you to them for downloading the jr 60 plan and somebody emailed me and chided me for using carbon fibre to build a classic.which I ignored. I'm sure Albert E Hatful would have used it had it been available. Any way no negativity intended fantastic site spend as much time on there as on this site from now on will donate 10 dollars every time I download as I wouldn't like to lose this resource long may they continue. would love to build a flying boat someday the tern would be nice and a good challenge to build electric and rc cheers Vince
  10. How's about this one guys Bloke goes to the barbers and asks if he can have his hair cut like Bad Pitt barber say's.
