In light of today's Nimbyistic and complaining society, let me add another coal to this particular fire: EP = clean and quiet: happy neighbours IC = oily, smokey and above all NOISY: lost flying field
-
The warnings in the instructions were so onerous that I ended up hardly putting any on at all - with the possible result that I needed 4.5 cans of paint to cover my Mentor. It's been fine though, no flaking and it glues fine too.
-
That's the idea Tom, get loads of batteries and then charge 'em at leisure later. I presume you're a Rt. Hon Member of Parliament and you bought all the lipos on expenses....

I gather superglue is used these days to seal wounds instead of stitches - it just 'drops off' after a while and the cut is healed (allegedly) so presumably it can't be too toxic...

Yes Stephen, electric plus real engine sounds (certainly not horrid 2 strokes) would be the best of both worlds IMHO
-
Stephen - My Mentor had a heavy landing the other day resulting in a couple of cracks at the wing end of the cockpit hatch. This has been repaired but it dented my confidence that the Mentor is both bulletproof and that it will see me through my A cert. I do not want to resurrect my Tiger Trainer 2 unless I really have to....

I read somewhere that the Twitter thingummy is just another manifestation of the ME ME ME times we live in, along with reality TV and the X Factor etc. Absolutely no idea if that's true or not....
-
There''s another solution to these and to the interminable dead-sticks you see on a Sunday morning: buy an electric motor....

Looking for a lipo charger reccomendations welcome

I got a cheap PSU from Hongkong for £8.99 incl postage, with a 5 amp output but it gets very hot and sounds stressed so I use it at half that - it's otherwise fine -
Bickley electric fly-in

Great stuff. As you mentioned the use of 4 stroke generators, I wondered if anyone has used an old unwanted 4 stroke model engine for this purpose? There must be a few of you out there with the knowledge and skill to do this....would need to be quiet though of course -
Fair enough re Flightpower. As a matter of balance, I've now read the Intruder review which was much more like it - well done Alex, now all you need to do is to clean up and move over to EP....

I blew up my last PSU charging 2 4S 5000s one after the other at 1C I'm more careful now....

I was looking forward to the SebArt Shark review as I recently had this as one of two options for an electric trainer - I eventually chose the Multiplex Mentor as it was a lot less expensive to buy and equip (and because of you your rave review) The review was a little disappointing though. It followed the RCM&E tradition of showing lots of nice external and flying shots and hardly any showing the interior fittings, mounts etc or mention of the hardware used. And what's this obsession with Flightpower batteries? There are other makes available, usually a lot cheaper and often just as good....

The Hangar 9 Pulse XT40 is a fabulous looking plane and evidently makes a great first low-winger

There is an enormous forum for this at RC Groups where all this has been covered - if you are brave enough to search through, you can see it here

Thanks guys, yes I neglected to say I did mean Lipos. I'm not having any problems with my cells, just wondered how long this would be so. I guess apart from the odd 15C burst, my Lipos would seldom exceed 10C, so I'm hopeful for 100+ cycles
-
Apologies all if this is in a Sitcky or other thread that I couldn't locate...but does anyone know how many cycles you can reasonably expect from an average quality battery assuming it has been regularly balance charged and has never been discharged too low (say lower than 3.4v per cell)

Hi Timbo - I've just read your 'double up and add zero' formula and have a follow-up. I have a trainer that uses an OS46LA and weighs probably about 6lbs AUW. Using the 100watts per pound rule, a 600watt motor should give this plane decent performance. But using your double up and add zero formula I'd have 920watts which would send the trainer into orbit. Any reason for the disparity, maybe I misunderstood? Nick

Hi David - a couple of pix as requested

I'll post one soon; getting it painted was by far the most time consuming part of the build but I prefer it to the standard white foam....

My recently built Multiplex Mentor maidened this weekend, bought as a result of the glowing review in last month's RCM&E Mine is finished in fluorescent yellow with bespoke decal scheme, motor is a Dualsky 3548CA-5, Turnigy 60A Plush ESC and using either 4S or 3S power. I want to praise Multiplex in that the kit was complete with no missing parts, everything was finished really well and it went together with no dramas as per the excellent instructions. To cap it all, it flies wonderfully well, and impressed all at my club with its 'sit' in the air and excellent trainer characteristics. Anyone else have any Mentor experience?

There are Deans and then there are Deans
Nick Rigg replied to Erfolg's topic in General Electric Flight Chat
Use Deans XT connectors from Phoenix-RC.com When soldering, definitely ensure you have male and female joined together to prevent deformation. I've found securing them to your worksurface with a lump of Blu-Tac before you solder makes the whole procedure painless -
Multiplex Mentor - what motor/esc?
Nick Rigg replied to Fog Dart's topic in General Electric Flight Chat
I'm planning to put a 4S 5000 battery in there; from the forums it seems this will be fine which is good news as I can use what I've got rather than buying new. I don't expect I will go anywhere near WOT so I'm hoping for extended flying times... I'm also going to paint it luminous yellow and add a few of the (black) decals for orientation purposes only. I suspect one or two of my more traditional clubmates may be slightly shocked when I turn up at the flying field...
