  1. Cracking Hurricane lad! From that clip I can't help think they might have had a better result using big R/C models !!
  2. The Aquastar is a built up kit not an ARTF anyway and yes it is small. It has several design mistakes thrown in for free such as a downthrust and not enough free buoyancy in the forward hull which make water handling fun. Here's mine, built with added ailerons, added buoyancy and upthrust. Flies great on a calm day only.
  3. Good! That's two of us. I'm an electronic design engineer so I can knock up an Rx operated switch should anyone want one, although I see HobbyKing have one for £6 so perhaps that's the way to go: **LINK** This is a good point to say thanks to you Chris for taking pics of your cannon retaining method (refer back to page 3 of this thread). After speaking to you about this at Woodford on Saturday morning I'll definitely be using it on my Hurri.
  4. I'd like to see that. I think I'll have a go. It'll help me orientate the camouflaged blighter on a grey Orme day!
  5. True Geoff, but seeing as Solartex is now out of production then Oracover is the only game in town unless you are prepared to use Diacover or other heatshrink fabrics that need separate adhesive and then doping to seal....
  6. I would say that is doubtful. It would seem that the film and tex production machines have been moved out of the Solarfilm factory ready for disposal (ie scrap) as they were out in the snow during beat from the east and storm emma. Apparently the message on the Solarfilm website about starting direct online sales is just to dispose of residual stock and then that's your lot.
  7. Good to see another 1 Squadron Hurricane Stephen! We'll have to arrange a squadron patrol over the Orme in September. Karel Kuttelwascher became famous for flying over German nightfighter stations and picking off the enemy fighters when they were vulnerable when taking off or landing. The colour profile you show does have long-range fuel tanks under the wings.
  8. No than's not right. You can buy Oratex for full-size aircraft that needs the adhesive to be applied to the airframe, but model Oratex, such as this: **LINK** has it's own adhesive backing, just like Solartex. Yes, you can buy an adhesive called Hotmelt as well, but this is intended to be used like Balsaloc is with Solartex - ie as an extra.
  9. But you did suggest a preference which could mislead someone into thinking polyester is a valid preference!
  10. I used the front fuselage formers in my model and everything else as templates to cut new, thinner parts. You do know that TN used the wing plan from his B-17 on his Sunderland as well don't you? The Catalina can be a tricky model subject from water, but I've seen one built from these plans go well: **LINK**
  11. Preference doesn't really come into resin choice over blue foam. If you use Polyester resin then bye-bye floats!!
  12. Good stuff! A lot of the small foamie seaplanes/flying boats can get upset by big water at an open site like Ullswater and much time is spent getting the rescue boat out to fetch them back and dry them out. There's a lot less shelter than you might be used to on a quarry pond. I like something a bit bigger that can handle any/all weather and water conditions (bit like the ideal PSS model ) but we do get calm conditions sometimes, so don't let me put you off. I've got a half-built Nijhuis Sunderland and the only thing I would say to you is don't bother with the CNC parts because they are too woody and too heavy.
  13. There's a lot of filling needed there. I'd be tempted to start again and to cover the floats with epoxy/glasscloth as that is the toughest and most durable in my experience. I do make my own foam floats, but I use white foam and cover with 1/16 balsa sheet. I sometimes cover with Oracover for speed if I'm lazy, but I usually regret it after a couple of years wear and tear and wish I'd glassed them from the get go. You could fill the gaps with light Polyfilla or the like and then cover the floats with something like HobbyKing iron-on film to give a tiny bit of waterproofing and protection to the filled repairs.
  14. Just to let any interested parties know, the Ullswater Steamer company have a live webcam and weather station at their Pooley Bridge pier. Our flying site is off to the left of the view of the webcam, but at least you can see what conditions are like. I only discovered these last year, but I found them useful. Webcam: **LINK** Weather Station: **LINK**
  15. Andy do you do wet flying as well as PSS too? What wet models do you have?
  16. Nothing stopping the OP from buying their own foam, wire, transformer, veneer, copydex etc and making their own wings, except none of that is cheap anymore either, so pay your money take your etc
  17. Oldgit, if you are in a motorhome, then the flying site is actually on a campsite that accommodates motorhomes, but not caravans. Indeed some of our members have motorhomes and park immediately next to the flying area. The nearest caravan site is Park Foot, a couple of hundred yards away as Percy says.
  18. I totally forgot that I used Cloud Models to cut some wings for some old Cotswold Models Midget Mustangs a couple of years ago, so I'd recommend them too.
