  1. Just to set the mood. The 109 even had its own song (alright, the clips are mainly the Ha 1112s from the BoB film but the song is original)
  2. One odd thing that almost everyone misses is that the Gustav (but not the Emil or Fritz) had a cambered tailfin (a sort of thin Clark Y section) to try to ease the tendency to ground loop. I suppose it would be too much to ask (and save a lot of short fingers after sanding a fin) Anyway - I'm interested
  3. Posted by RICHARD WILLS on 19/10/2017 08:49:03: Those of you that were interested in a single engined fighter , might want to check out the Warbirds Replicas Bf109 club elsewhere on this forum . Umm where is that exactly Richard? There's a Macchi C202 club but no Messerschmitt one that I can find
  4. OK - so Finnair's flight AY666 was from Copenhagen to Helsinki and made the last flight yesterday
  5. After retiring, I went to the Social Security office to apply for my pension. The woman behind the counter asked me for any documents to verify my age.. I looked in my pockets and realised I had left my wallet at home. I told the woman that I was very sorry, but I would have to go home and come back later. The woman said, 'Unbutton your shirt'. So I opened my shirt revealing my curly silver hair. She said, 'That silver hair on your chest is proof enough for me,' and she processed my application.. When I got home, I excitedly told my wife about my experience. She said, 'You should have dropped your pants. You might have got Disability, too' And that's how the fight got started...... .

  7. I may have gone a shade overboard - I not only inserted the carbon stiffeners full length, I also 'pegged' the boom/wing joints with cocktail sticks
  8. As does the spring starter shown on the box brokenenglish. That was another later development. I used to convert Keil Kraft 'Junior Scale' kits to control line with a Dart up front - flew great on 20 foot lines I really miss my Dart
  9. Odd - he's also offering a cleaner looking one (albeit without the rubber insert) for the same price. Strange thing - he lives in Slough, quotes £4.50 for P&P but won't post to the UK . However THIS one is a definitely legit bargain (but to be honest, I can see the bidding spiralling up like a FAI duration model on steroids)
  10. For any of you lot interested in a cheap 5 watt 2 metre/70 cm handy talky for under 20 quid, check here (I've used these people before and, unlike another well-known Chinoise firm, you usually get the stuff in a week or so)
  11. Mea culpa Steve - I should have checked (it was originally 100 Watts but I'm glad to see it was reduced - maybe get some of them to go for the full license now ). Now if they would just restrict them on some of the frequencies (same as the opld Novice call where they weren't allowed on 2 metres and so on) it might make a better incentive to progress. QRM on 2 metres Tim? I was driven crazy with QRM from military 'jammers' which his me at round an S8 24/7. It only stopped when I got a multi-more rig (the FM only ones were wide open to RF coming in on the IF)
  12. I agree it's confusing. When I renewed mine I had actually phoned to find out the details and/or any fees - the person on the other end just went ahead and fixed it up (naturally there were no complaints from here), but I hadn't changed address. It's not a logbook entry that's needed - it's one from the callbook (the big one that lists everyone's callsigns and name/address or 'details withheld'. The mandatory requirement to keep logs btw is also a goner (along with the Morse Code requirement)
  13. I'd let mine lapse for a few years but all I did was to phone OfCom to ask about re-activation. I did ask if I needed to re-submit my C&G slips but they told me it wasn't necessary and re-activated the callsign 'on the spot' (paper documentation is now a 'DIY' option - you just download and print it). From OfCo: " I used to hold a licence but allowed it to lapse. Can I use the new online licensing system to re-instate it? No. If you wish to become licensed once more, you will need to apply again. A fee of £20 is payable, to contribute to the recovery of administration costs. When applying, you will need to provide a copy* of any documents which prove that you previously held the call sign. This could either be: - An old licence / validation document; - A City & Guilds Institute certificate - If you were a member of the Radio Society of Great Britain then proof of entry in a RSGB call book would also be sufficient. *Please do not send original documents"
  14. Actually you still are G8XJX (it's never re-allocated). You're now a full 'A' license if you choose to renew (and it's free and done online nowadays); you can keep the G8 callsign or get a new M0 one instead. You may as well - you cen get real el cheapo 2M/70cM handy-talkies from China for peanuts
  15. There is always a problem there but the RSGB is more than willing to take on any local jobsworth. What they always overlook is that, technically, it's not a 'hobby' - it's the Amateur Radio SERVICE. It does have some strange side effects. For instance, the 'shack' is actually a restricted area under the Wireless Telegraphy Act (and when all the troubles were going on here, I could quite legitimately tell the army that 'No, you can't touch my equipment' and that was the end of the story (even the local cops backed me up on that). The ONLY people who had right of entry were the Radio Investigation Service.
  16. My morse is terrible, so I use digital modes. WAC on 17 and 30 metres with it
  17. Martin, try PSK31 for HF. I've worked NZ and Australia with under 100 Watts
  18. Cuban8 - no longer is Morse not required but even the C&G RAE is gone. Nowadays you start as a 'novice' and work up from there by passing 'club run' exams. I've got my C&G in both 224 (same as you) and also the old RAE. In a way the incentive for a 'full' license is gone as an 'intermediate' callsign can operate on all bands with 100 Watts (which is all I operate on and which most rigs are capable off without using external power amps)
  19. Then there was a miss Norma Jeane Baker assembling a drone
  20. Posted by Tom Sharp 2 on 19/09/2017 01:03:05: I always remember Tony Hancock in 'The Radio Ham'. B&W TV for those not of a certain age. Try here :D
  21. I need to put my Carolina windom back up (it came down in a storm and we were having an extension built at the back so it had to be deferred). Hopefully I'll have everything back when the weather improves. Besides that, propagation is terrible Dáithí GI7OMY
