Basically it's the way the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) group different flying disciplines.
 
The initial F means it's aeromodelling, 
F1 is free flight
F2 is control line
F3 is r/c
F4 is scale
F5 is electric.
etc. 
 
Within F3 the final letter is the specific discipline within r/c, eg. F3A is r/c aerobatics.
 
It's all defined somewhere on the FAI website.  Try here as a starting point.
