cymaz
Dear All I have a 25A 2v battery, 20amp immersion heater switch and fuse. 2 core cable and a glow clip. All this works fine and there is no overheating etc. What I would like to know is where would I put a volt meter in the circuit so it will only read when the glow clip is on and heating up the plug. This is the type of volt meter I have
Peter Beeney
cymaz, With respect, but can I ask if you want to use the volt meter to indicate that your glow plug is glowing, or not? I only ask because the voltage at the glowplug with a fixed 2 volt source is going to be relatively unimportant. Chris Bott - Moderator
The voltmeter should be connected accross the glow clip I would think. NOTE: Connected here it will read whenever the switch is on, irrespective of whether the clip is on the glowplug or not. It is more usual to use an ammeter in series with the circuit, that way you can tell if current is actually flowing through the plug. If the plug is blown, then no current will flow and the ammeter reads zero. You may be able to tell with a voltmeter, the voltage is likely to be a little lower when powering a good plug, than when not connected to a plug. cymaz
Better get an ammeter then??
Frank Skilbeck
a 5A ammeter would be fine, 3A is a pretty normal current for a glow plug, something like this
cymaz
Great, thanks. I suppose there is a + and - to the ammeter
Chris Bott - Moderator
Yep theres a + and - get it the wrong way and it will try to go backwards. Make sure it's in series too, connected accross the battery it will short it out and probably let out a little smoke...
cymaz
Considering I have a 25A battery then I sould really get a 25/30A meter
fly boy3
Hi cymaz, no, there is no need for a bigger ammeter, if you are only using it to check the plug current. As Chris has said, it must be connected in series. Cheers
Frank Skilbeck
Yes, the problem with a 25A is that you wopn't be able to read it easilly at 3A, get above 5A and the glow plug will behave as a fuse.................
cymaz
OK . Just ordered one thanks
