TN 134" Lancaster build

Recommended Posts

Looking great and sorry to hijack your thread but I also building a smaller one and I am cutting out the fuselage ribs, doing it the slow way blush. A question, how would you access the batteries and radio installation? Do you cut out a section of the fuselage as a hatch for access? I will start a build log when I have built enough cut outs and would take photos as I go along. I plan to build a Manchester as well as a Lancaster. I am using Tony Nijhuis's 72" plan and increasing the scale to 102" to make it 1/12th scale for both. (just over 90" span for the Manchester).

been stuck indoors waiting for a delivery so couldn't get much done.

i have knocked this up, its not scale and some one will say the wheel is the wrong shape or the colours are wrong. cheeky

but i am not building a scale masterpiece, just one that looks ok from a mile away.

pilots area.

had a peer in through the canopy, hmmmmmmmmm

big empty space behind the pilots seat.

not now, navigators and radio operators area.

cut the 2 small windows in the side of the fuselage for them as well.

debating cutting the hole in the top of the fuselage for the astrodome.

need to look at the bomb aimers area next.

leading edge sanded to shape.
then we looked at the fins, sanded them to shape and did the leading edges.
deep breath and lets fit them shall we.
lots of measuring and trial fits before we were ready (gulp)
wooden skewers ready, 2 holes drilled in each fin and end of each wing.
jig it up and check for true.
mix up araldite and take it all apart again.
smear glue over the joining surfaces and skewers, push it all together.
square it up again, and pin down to the board.
fingers crossed it all stays level when dry.

the kavalier fuselage fits nicely between the fins.

we continue to plod on.

  • 2 weeks later...

phew, after an all day session we finaly have a tail bolted on.

and its square. (well within 2mm)

The problem with models this size is finding a space big enough to lay it out for squaring up.

then you find the floor is not level and the problems start.

still its on now, just need to make some locating pegs and i can build the bottom of the fuselage.
