Oldbaldfella
Hi, I've seen some people with lipos taped to their starter motors to avoid having to carry 12v lead batteries about. What are the criteria for such lipos, please?
Phil May
I've used a single 3 cell 2200 lipo to operate a starter for a .61 size glow motor. It started it about 6 times with no problem and still had life left in it, bearing in mind this motor is a cracker to start. Tony H
I've been using a 3s 1300MAH lipo to start .15-.40 ic engines with no problems and the battery barely use's any capacity up after a days flying down to about 11.9v
Ben B
Even a fairly modest battery will suffice. Most people use 12v gelcells to start their engines and I find that they tend to get rather sulky and drop their voltages if they are asked to give more than about 10A. Even the most basic lipo of 1000mAH will give that without much complaining. Given the price of 2200maH 3 cell batteries I'd use on of those. I'd just tie-wrap it on the other side of the starter motor to where your palm sits.
John Privett
I have an Align starter for my heli that takes any 3S LiPo of around 2300mAh. Like this; I really ought to charge the battery some time...

FlyinBrian
I have used a 3 cell 3600mah Lipo with my starter for several years, starts everything up to 120 glow and 26cc petrol no problem.
Garbo
I use a kavan starter 3s is good for a 120fs and as its rated up to 18v, 4s is good for a 35cc petrol.
Steve Hargreaves - Moderator
OBF I think you have found a fantastic use for these LiPo thingies....I often see them in model shops taking up shelf space & wonder what on earth they could be used for..... I did hear that some people actually use them to power models with but that can't be true.....can it??
