Scruffmeister
I'm finding the nylon wing bolts on my AcroWot keep loosening in flight. I've reduced vibration as much as I can! Any tips to keep them in place during flight? I did thing maybe a rubber washer between bolt and wing might help but haven't tried it yet. Solly
Hi. You must have too much vibration in the model. I know you say that you have reduced vibration as much as possible, presumably you have balanced the prop, and spinner if present. You don't say if the power is I/c or electric. Have you made sure the engine bolts are really tight, also the engine mount is firmly attached?
Scruffmeister
Hi - prop and sinner balanced on a good balancer. All bolts double tightened and thread-locked. Only thing I can think of is the engine is a Saito 82 still running in, perhaps producing a little more vibration than normal. Notwithstanding that, are there any good ways to secure nylon bolts? Dave Bran
Well, I have never heard of nylon bolts that were the correct fit working loose, in over 40 years modelling, vibration or not! Suggests the bolts are NOT as good a fit as they should be. Change them AND the captive nuts............
WolstonFlyer
Ho about locking washers like this?**Link**
Bob Cotsford
If it's an ARTF, did you replace the captive nuts? The ones on my nephew's had next to no thread, if yours are the same they may be slipping rather than slackening.
Robin Kearney
Scruffmeister, as Bob says, I would have a look at how deep the thread is on the captive nuts in the fuselage, on my AcroWot one of the nuts had almost no thread. I had ripmax replace them, however it is a trivial job to knock them out and out decent ones in.
Scruffmeister
It is indeed an ARTF AcroWot. I'll certainly replace the nylon bolts... not sure how easy it will be to replace the captive nuts though ... don't they need a good hammering into their former which would damage an assembled airframe? Bob Cotsford
Use a 6mm steel bolt and large washer to pull the nuts into the ply plate, but first put a smear of epoxy around the underside of the captive nut so that it will be bonded into place and will not come loose later. Greybeard
The captive nuts supplied with these models don't always have sufficient thread depth and that is almost certainly your problem. My dog had one that was OK and one that wasn't. Bob's method of pulling in captive nuts is the one that I also use.
Scruffmeister
Thanks all for advice and esp. Bob for the tip -- will give it a try as the threads do look a bit poor on closer inspection!
