Hi,

I've just aquired an ic trainer from a car boot sale believe it or not! Having been saving the pennies for a new one, when this appeared I nearly bit the poor fella's hand off as it 's in great nick and has all the gear to get going. Am in touch with my local club and really looking forward to being involved with this hobby.

Best wishes

Hi soulinvader, whilst not a member of cymax's club I would recommend a visit. A very well structured club with some very expeirenced instuctors.

If you ever decide you wish to try slope soaring feel free to PM me, we have some of the best slopes in the country in Cornwall, you dont need to be in a club to fly them and mostly some very friendly slopers.

Thanks for the welcome!

I met up with the fella who runs the club I'm joining today so he could check out my gear...looks like I didnt get as good a deal as I thought...crying. I suppose this is why one should always get advise before parting with saved pennies, but I got cought up in the moment and must have come over as proper green to the guy who sold me it. Mainly, the radio is 35mhz which as I'm certain you all know (but not me) is out of date, in order to learn how to fly at the club via buddy box, I'd have to replace with a 2.4 tx and rx ££££££ also, the engine was shocking. Upon opening, it was full of rust and would need new bearings and new carb plus a deep cleen ££££. The actual plane I'm told is just a bit old and baggy (arnt we all?) and would need all edges sealing with diamond tape or similar (just time).

Luckilyy tho....I may be able to chop it all in and get a new trainer package with EVERYTHING needed to get going from another guy at the club, Hopefully this will mean my £90 hasnt gone down the drain and I can continue my quest to get airborne.

Yeeehaaaw!

Actually 35mhz is not out of date it is still used by very large amounts of modellers, There are some disadvantages to 35mhz but there are also disadvantages to 2.4g. Its perfectly possible to buddy up 35mhz transmitter to a 2.4g tx if they are of the same brand. What club is giving this advice?

Agree with Bearair, i still run 35mhz and teach new members with buddy lead; Spectrum/JR 2.4ghz to JR 35mhz and Futaba 2.4ghz to Futaba 35mghz. There's no need for you to replace that at this point in time.

35mhz no problem in the club. The club trainer is on 2.4ghz and the slave Tx is an old 35mhz box.

Try the club trainer first and get a feel of it. Weather poor on Saturday so I suspect no-one will be there but PM me if you need to know anything. I have the club trainer Tx's.

Thanks everyone, there is a lot to get your head round as a newbie! Particulaly cymaz, really kind of you to offer. I'm joining the Redruth club as I live in Helston so it is much closer, I am carer for my disabled wife and have two small children so the less time in the car = more having fun in the air!

Now, I am also a musician and have just had a payment through for a song that has enabled me a little spends on my new hobby. Because of this I want to take the plunge and buy everything new. I have decided on a Seagull Arising star with sc46 engine and Futaba 6ex and R617FS rx.

I forked out £90 quid at the car boot for the Kyosho Trainer 40 with Futaba skysport 6 and mds pro 40 (in need of new rear bearings I discovered ) and 4 s3003s. This I am now going to sell, but where does one do this? Being so big, I'd imagine EBAY would be tricky due to fragile postage? Would people who fly these check gumtree?

Also, would it be better to split? ie, sell the tx, rx. The plane, the engine. Keeping the servos for the new purchase , or keep it all togther as a deal? I'm not after making the whole 90 back, but as much as possible.

Obviously the how long is a piece of string question springs to mind, but any advise would very much be appreciated

Best wishes!

As a member of Redruth you will become a member of the BMFA. I buy most of my equipment and sell what I do not need on the BMFA clasifieds section. I would definitley keep the servo's futaba 3003s are more than adequate for your Arising Star. I would also keep the trainer as it is as good quality if not better than your new Arising Star if its reasonable condition. so that leaves you tx , rx, and motor not sure what you would get for this but if you look at the prices that equivalant equipment is going for on BMFA that should be your guide.. Sell the tx and rx together and the motor either bin or flog but I doubt you would get much for it.

Hope this helps

Agreed - the servos are good and the Kyoso was a decent trainer in its day - probably worth hanging on to as a second model - useful to have two as a beginner, one "in the hangar under repair" and one to fly wink 2

Regarding the rest, frankly I'd hang on to the Tx - if you buy a Futaba 6EX (which you say you're planning to) then it will buddy with this one and you have your own stand alone training system. Give the Rx to someone in your new club that is still using 35MHz Futaba gear - make a new friend!

The engine - well, it might be useful as a doorstop? Frankly, if its in as bad a condition as you describe I'd bin it. MDS never have enjoyed a great reputation and in poor condition its worth nothing. More hassle to sell it than you'd get for it.

Thanks for the advise. All very sound. I was told though by the fella who is in charge of Redruth that my 35mhz will diffinatly not buddy up with the 6ex? Still, I am going to get the new radio for peace of mind and as Roger said, sell the rx and tx. If I get 25 quid, at least this will get a flight box or power starter.

Good idea to keep the kyosho as I'm sure that not every landing will be smooth and it will work as a spare. As for the MDS. I think I'm going to order a new bearing and use it as a project to work on and gain experiene rebuilding an engine and seeing what makes them tick.

As for the Goonhilly club, I've never heard of it. But on googling, it looks to be very small and has quite restrictive flight times. I will only get the odd few hours a week and would like a decent social side of this as well. Being a carer isnt the easiest, espessially when its your partner and time away talking to other humans is just what the doctor orderes - literally!

I dont want to contradict the gentleman from redruth but a Skysport 6 will buddy with a 6ex.

Try reading this thread on here Cheap trainer set to connect to my 6EX.

I can also recomend getting a lead from Paul at St Austel Models he might not be able to compete with some on line shops for price, but his honest advice can save you lots in the long run1.
