Will123
I am currently building my first plane from plans. I need to create the semi- circular leading edge on the elevator and rubber. Is there an easy way to do this or is it a simple case of being careful with a sanding block. any advice would be appreciated
Martin Whybrow
I do it with a sanding block, then finish with fine grade paper wrapped around the edge and worked along the edges, to blend the radius into the surfaces.
David Tweddle
One way If you want them formed first before fitting use pine battens etc. drill the size you require then split and glue on the type of abrasive you use. Other way + sand paper to finish, do not for get the masking tape to protect the ribs etc. you don't want sanded. Third way David
David Tweddle
PS look on the build threads they are there for the practical tips people use and the what tools sections. David
will -0
Are you sure you want radiused edges on these surfaces? This requires the hinge line to be recesses in the control surface (at the centre of the radius) or the surface will bind. If using flat pin hinges (kavan etc) you generally want a chamfered edge. Ernie
Hi Will123 Use a vee shaped leading edge for rudder and elevators. Make a pencil mark along the centre line of the surface. cut the hinge slots, then use a davids razor plane (or sandpaper) to cut a 45° angle on each side of the line ernie
