I had not thought of soaking overnight before steaming ( I should have remembered Ray Mears did that when building a canoe on TV) I think there are very different varieties of Walnut and that the best stuff ( in the 1970's) came from France and was much harder and dearer than American walnut which was a different species and a softer timber. John Miller 4 Posted September 20, 2014 Author Share Posted September 20, 2014 Many thanks Guys I knew you would come up trumps, I have in fact used Stevo's method boiling water and steam (did get admonished for filling the Kitchen with Steam) clamped it to a short length of 2" od tube, job done.
