I agree with you Dave. We went in 2002 and find it hard to describe the atmosphere to people who haven't been.

We also visited some local cemetaries where there were many graves with 3 generations of the same family in, all of whom perished within a very short space of time. Very moving.

The vast expanse of Birkenau with its chimneys sticking out of the ground as far as the eye can see is also something that is hard to describe to people. There was a family of foxes living in one of the destroyed gas chambers and the youngsters were quite happily playing in front of us!
