Simon Hall 2
I have noticed on my oldest of 2 Radians that there was some play when you pull on the prop assembly. I only noticed as the prop assembly has become a bit noisy compared to the other plane. The newer Radian does not have any play. I took off the spinner cone and undid the prop nut. It's just the adapter in the pic that has play, but the shaft is static. I have a new prop adapter and was going to try fitting it. I removed the small grub screw with the tiny allan key head, but the adapter does not come off. Any ideas as to what the problem could be here, apart from me! Thanks. Martin Harris - Moderator
Maybe thread-lock has crept between the adapter and shaft? I wouldn't advise a heat gun on the adapter for obvious reasons but can you heat a large lump of metal and use it to heat the adapter? I'm sure you've looked on the opposite side for a second grub screw!
Simon Hall 2
Hi Martin, yes there is no opposite grub screw. I was pulling quite hard by hand and it did not budge. Could it have somehow grooved the shaft and lodged itself in there? There seems to be something else in there on the shaft. I tried pressing it gently with a screwdriver thinking it could be a sort of release bearing or something. I can't really make out how it attaches to the shaft as it's so tiny. Martin Harris - Moderator
I'm thinking thread-lock due to the pink colour around the threaded hole...
Simon Hall 2
Any idea why there would be play on the adapter?
john stones 1 - Moderator
My first thought would be an unbalanced prop/spinner has caused it to wear on the shaft. John Edited By john stones 1 on 03/07/2015 17:56:
Simon Hall 2
So the best way to remove the adapter would be heat instead of brute force? If the shaft is worn, does that mean a new motor? I don't know anything about prop balancing, the props are standard and all I do is wipe any crud off them after flying.
john stones 1 - Moderator
I would think the adaptor is most likely worn it's softer material, and you can buy replacement shafts anyway for a motor Simon...but i'm only guessing on the causes John try giving it a squirt of release oil before you apply any heat you never know your luck
Dave Hopkin
You could try rigging a ersatz puller, by using a socket spanner head that fits fully over the adaptor but rides in the motor, then use a spinner nut (the type with a tommy bar hole) with some piano wire through the hole so that as you tighten the spinner nut the piano wire engages with the socket and as you tighten the spinner nut the pressure it transfered onto the motor face and with luck and a following wind it should come off
john stones 1 - Moderator
If you can get some long nose pliers on the shaft Simon, try fitting a prop to the adaptor and rock it back and forth, you might break loose whatever is holding it ? Simon Hall 2
Thanks John, I will give it a try. This seems like the easiest option for me to start. I will try to put some padding on the pliers teeth as I don't want to damage the shaft.
