Doug Ireland
A quick look at the finished wing...
Peter Miller
Yes, I heard a few months ago that irons could be hard to get. Try Galaxy Models, Great stock and great service. The travelling iron does work, I have one as a stand by. Model looks nice.

Doug Ireland
Hi Peter,A quick question if I may. The AUW for the Miss D is 2lb 6 1/2 as quoted in your magazine article. The only difference between mine and yours is two mini servos in the wing yet my model weighs in at 3 1/2" pounds without the fuselage covering. Are your figures correct?Doug. Peter Miller
Ouch! Yes, My figures are correct. I haven't got her now but I just weighed Okie Swinger which is the same size and gear. and that is 2 lbs 12 ounces. The only hard grade of balsa is in the spars. everything else is medium to soft. GWS rx, Standard battery. Mini (not Micro Servos) Strange how one can add so much weight. My metal tank was pretty light.By the way, your Feugray prints will be in the post tomorrow.Talking of weight, my new model is a bit heavy. 500 sq in. and it will weigh 6 lbs. including 5 1/2 ounces of lead in the tail. Wing loading will be 27 oz. per sq. foot. Way over my normal limits.IT does have three .15s up front though.
Doug Ireland
I've got three standard servos in the fuse, could try mini's?Oh, and thanks for the plans.
Peter Miller
That might save an ounce.I still can't work out how you got an almost 50% increase in the wieght on a model that size.
Doug Ireland
Kitchen scales could be out.
Peter Miller
I hope so. Should be good scales for dieting Try weighing a new packet of something in the kitchen.I have a couple of sets of electronic scales, one for my post. They weigh down to 1 gram (Only about £20.)It is amazing the range of weights of wood. 1/4" sq, can vary from 6 to 12 grams. I use thew scales to match spars and sheet. Doug Ireland
I was just going by texture to try and match the wood. I used spruce for the wing spars by they weighed next to nothing anyway. I'll have a look for a decent set of scales today.I took a 4.8v rx pack apart last night to make it into a square format that will fit between the 1/4" ply uprights for the U/C. This should get the balance sorted out without adding extra weight. Getting a bit congested in the radio bay now!Got the plans yesterday, cheers. Peter Miller
Actually spruce is a good choice because it is no heavier than really hard balsa but is stronger with a better grain pattern, There isn't an awful lot of room in this model.Glad that the plans arrived safely. Peter Miller
Thanks for your kind remarks about my plans. I do try to produce plans that I am happy to build from. Well, I have to build from them.Wood selection is important. I use medium for the fuselage sides, hard for the spars and everything else is soft. Doug Ireland
Hi Guys,Everything has come to grinding halt as I'm sitting in the middle of the North Sea digging for oil again, should be back for the weekend. Doug Ireland
Hi Peter,I've lost the handbook that came with the SC 15 engine. Can you remember off the top of your head what the running-in settings are?Cheers,Doug.
Peter Miller
They don't give running in settings as such. The needle on the new ones seems to be about 4 turns open.I have just had one that gave trouble with insufficient taper on the needle but that is rare.Running in is simple, sort sharp runs at high speed, That is almost flat out but just a touch on the rich side. about a minute or a litle less, then slow and rich and then back up. Standard running in for an ABC engine. I find that a tank full or so is enough to get it ready for flying. If you have an ALDI store near you, on Thursday they will have electronic scale, weigh up to 5 KG in 1 gram steps (Plus Imperial) for £7. Doug Ireland
Thanks for that Peter.I got a set of digital scales from Argos last week and they appear to be very accurate, the complete airframe still tops out at 3 pounds though! A few grams of solder wrapped around the tail skid and secured with heat-shrink was all that was needed to balance the beast.
Peter Miller
Three pounds, well, still bearable I guess.
Doug Ireland
I was going to use the mark "G-BPVX" which used to belong to a Mk III aircraft that crashed and killed its pilot during a qualification flight for a Pylon Race. Would this be acceptable or should I use a made-up number?
Ben Mullins
I went to Shoreham Airshow this year and there were 3 cassutts there, one was G-RUNT, G-BOMB and i cant remember the other!
