A good example of where a UAV makes something viable. It is of course perfectly possible to have done this work with full-size aircraft, but its not viable. It would be too expensive and the scientists concerned would never have got the funding. But a UAV is much, much cheaper. Now not only is it technically possible it's also viable economically. Nice example.

There is a lot of similar work going on - particularly in areas such as wildlife conservation where UAVs are being used to monitor and count populations etc. Again it wouldn't be possible to get the funding to do this with full size aircraft, and furthermore a full size aircraft would be too intrusive. But a UAV is not only cheaper its also quieter and less disruptive.
