Robin Etherton
Just started a Mosquito build using the plans from Ivan Pettigrew and ordered up a pair of retracts from Hobbyking. Can anyone out there explain why the holes for the retract leg are sized at 3mm? 8 AWG is 3.26mm 10swg is 3.251mm 1/8 inch is 3.175mm I know you can get 3mm piano wire but it is abnormally expensive. Easy enough to drill out but an unnecessary complication??? Just wondering. Robin
Denis Watkins
I use Silver Steel Robin, it is 3 mm and stiffer and not too expensive Point taken though, nothing else easily fits
Robin Etherton
Is it easy to bend?
Denis Watkins
Mine are both straight Robin, You don't really want " easily bent" on retracts, but 3mm, engineering wise, will easily bend in a bending tool It is a compromise, on grass bumpy strips, I need the stiffness
Robin Etherton
Essential to bend in this case according to Ivan on his plan to avoid breaking the retracts. He makes quite a point of it in his build blog so who am I to ignore the advice. Quite a complicated set of bends as well. Would have been a lot easy if I could have put my hands on my wire bender!!!!! Thanks for the comments.
Simon Chaddock
Robin If you want readily available (free!) soft 3 mm wire - wire coat hangers. I can assure it will bend before damaging the retract - mine certainly does.
Robin Etherton
Yes I had forgotten those. Used to use them for joiners on the tail plane and control line ailerons. Made for easy tweaking. However still wondering why the choice of 3mm. Is it perhaps that they were designed by someone far far away from actually ever used them?
