PETER FRANCIS
For some reason I am struggling to get 0,8mm steel wire or 21swg piano wire. Need it to replace elevator rod that runs in a tube. Any ideas please. Ta Pete
David P Williams
Peter - 20 and 22 swg seem readily available from SLEC amongst others- does it need to be exactly 21 gauge?
brokenenglish
IMO, odd numbers of swg size are extremely rare. I don't recall ever using one. If it's just a rod running in a tube, does it have to be a dead fit? Wouldn't 22 swg do the job? Whoever used "21 swg" in the first place? Are you sure it isn't actually a metric size? Robin Etherton
Eileens emporium has it . Robin
Christopher Harper
I've been buying piano wire from Hugh Craig Harpsichords lately, good prices and usually arrives by next day post.
PETER FRANCIS
Thanks all. Model is ARTF, tube is built into F/g fuselage. Can't change it. Supplied wire is 0.8mm but not long enough. 22 Swg is to sloppy. Hoping that 21 Swg will not be tight. Getting it from Eileens. Thanks again. kc
I had not heard of Eileens Emporrium before - sounds a useful supplier
brokenenglish
As I suspected, your wire is actually metric. Is is difficult to obtain metric wire sizes in the UK?
PETER FRANCIS
I have some 0,8mm but it's to short for this model. No idea where it came from, I used to have a small stock of it.
Stuart C
Try American Wire Gauge. If I remember, 20 awg is 0.8mm, but best to take a micrometer to your LMS.
PETER FRANCIS
20 Amg is the same size as 21 Swg (0,812). Keep fingers crossed as the 21 Swg is arriving tomorrow. If it don't fit then I am back to square one.
kc
If the supplied wire is only a bit too short then consider using a longer clevis instead of a Z bend, maybe soldering it into a solder extender first
PETER FRANCIS
No room for a clevis or extender. The 21 SWG wire arrived today & fits the tube fine. Result.

Andy48
Sorry David, you've got this one all wrong. The were always called Barn Owls. It was only when they started nesting in newly invented large farmers sheds that they decided to call these farmers sheds barns.
