Alex Calderhead
I have been given a Murataka Beech Staggerwing partly built, would anyone have a copy of the build instructions?

Engine Doctor
Good luck with your staggering. Fabulous scale kits but if not careful can come out very heavy.

Martin Harris - Moderator
The C of G is best described as aligned with the rear edge of the top wing's LE piece at the root i.e. @ 3/8" back from the LE - if you want me to send you a copy of the plan and/or build notes just PM me your email address... Alex Calderhead
Thanks Martin, I have sent you my email address. Here is what I have: Already it does seem quite heavy but we shall see!
Alex Calderhead
I was intending to use a Laser .70 I have unused but looking at it I am not so sure now.
Martin Harris - Moderator
The one I have experience was initially bought by a friend and was heavily detailed (and heavily painted) and certainly felt very weighty for its size. It came with an OS52FS but the seller assured him that it flew fine on it... I flew it for him and it got off the ground - and fully lived up to the stagger part of its name! It didn't end very well with a wing drop and heavy arrival after I tried to nurse it to any sort of height to turn before it got too far away. After discussion, we decided to fit an RCV 90 which (when it was performing properly) flew the model very well. Perhaps Jon Harper might see this and comment on the comparison of a 70 against this engine, but my feeling is that a good 90 would be more suitable. Alex Calderhead
Thanks for sending the information. Did the model you flew have the flaps fitted on the bottom wing? My experience with my Jabberwock was that it was so draggy flaps were certainly not needed, and it flew with a 40cc petrol!
Martin Harris - Moderator
It's a long time since I last flew it but my hazy recollection is that the flaps did make for very steady approaches. Whether to build working flaps is really a matter of personal preference as I'm sure the model would be fine (and a little lighter) without them. I have the model in my loft after it passing through the hands of another member who didn't get on with it and gave me the rather battered bare airframe. Maybe I'll give it a go one day...
