Back in the early 90s I did a week's gliding course in Derbyshire and the week coincided with an anniversary of the Dambuster's raid and there was to be a flypast of at least one Lancaster along the Derwent dams so all the local fields were full of temporary car parks.

In the morning I had a brilliant flight with the instructor. We flew along the ridge over Edale towards the Kinder Scout plateau and along back towards Win and Lose hills. We gained enough height over Win Hill to do a loop (with the instructor flying, of course).

The instructor took my friend out in the afternoon in the Puschaz trainer and tried to do an equally ambitious flight but was unable to gain enough height to regain the airfield. All the usual landing out fields were full of cars so he chose to land on the school football pitch in Hope. He somehow managed to side slip in between the goal posts for a perfect landing. He phoned in and we had to go out with a trailer to tow him back.

Someone else I knew from sailing landed his Jodel on the M1 and taxied into Leicester Forest East services (under police escort). He was quite upset when they wouldn't allow him to use the motorway as a runway to take off once the weather had cleared. Fortunately they were able to manhandle the aircraft into a neighbouring field or his little escapade would have been more expensive than it was. He did get fined but I don't how much or what the offence was. This was sometime in the 80s so the road wasn't quite as busy as it is now.
