A short tutorial in electric motor timing required!

Having used some of the larger electric outrunner motors and noticed that for instance the Hacker A100-8 and A100-10 quote the timing recommended at 22 degs. However, I have a similar sized outrunner from Turnigy (100cc equivalent) with no information or manual with it. Changing the timing with my Hobbywing OPTO esc is straightforward (defaulted at 15deg with a 0-30deg range possible.) Short of experimenting with various timings I can see no other way of find out what the ideal timing should be. Certainly the number of poles on the Turnigy is likely to be 20+ I would imagine. Thanks.

The HobbyWing ESC doesn't have an auto setting sadly.

My Dualsky HV OPTO ESCs all have auto settings, but they are designed for 160amp continuous whereas the 200amp+ I require is provided by the HobbyWing ESC.

Hmm.. the endless-sphere post is quite lengthy and consensus seems it a 28 pole motor. There doesn't seem to be anything about timing and furthermore in 2010 there was not the ESC to handle such things unlike now. I worry that these guys in the posting where using the motor on a motorbike!!

I have found this very useful youtube clip on motor timing theory and practice which sort answers most of my general questions. Well worth a watch if you are interested in this sort of thing, plus the guy does a few more clips which drill further into the subject. Enjoy.
