Weng Lim
Hi guys, Is there any merit in using depron for ribs in place of 1/16" soft balsa? 3mm depron certainly feels very light. Anybody with any experience ? Weng
Tim Mackey
Seen it done, works well, and depron is cheaper than wood ! Better?.... depends on your definition of better I suppose. Depron will bend more than balsa, but then that could be a good thing ....or a bad thing. See what I mean
Weng Lim
Thank you, Timbo. I'll give it a go !
Bruce Richards
I am building a Fun fly model called a Fusion and this has 6mm depron ribs blog link. They are very ligh and have had most of the material removed apart prom the perimeter and some struts between. They seemed weak until I added the rib caps when the whole wing seemed to double in strength.
Terry Whiting
Too true give it a go. I once made a wing using polystyrene ceiling tile ribs, and capping strips . That was in the days before foamcore wings, never had any problem with the wing.
Terence Lynock
Where can I get 6mm Depron in the Midlands? just about run out of the stuff I bought at Cosford and need some more, found that Coverloc is great stuff for glueing Depron together and goes much further than the stuff made specifically for the job.Coverloc takes a lot longer to dry though but does dry hard and is easily sandable, just putting a XB70 Valkyrie together with it and no problems yet, regards, Terry
Martin McIntosh
I think that we need to form a small group to buy Depron in quantity to get it at a reasonable price. I believe that £50 would get us quite a bit, enough each for lots of ribs and foamies. Any ideas on this?
Bruce Richards
Martin is tha £50 each or £50 total?
Martin McIntosh
Bruce, £50 total. Looked up some manufacturers a while ago and that seems to be the minimum outlay. Cannot remember them now but could look it up. Also carbon rod and tube can be bought very cheaply from a company in Rickmandsworth for about £1 per metre for a minimum outlay of £25 the last time I used them. RBJ reinforced plastics LTD. Weng Lim
The problem with Depron is in its transportation. We would all need to live very close to each other to benefit from collective buying.

The address for Floormaster unit E, Albany park ind estate, Frimley road, camberley, Surrey. Richard Tindall
try www.birbek.com then under the underlays and insulation section £3.35 sqm
Cpt Biggles
Hi AllDo not forget p&p of £6.55 from birbek which all adds up I have now found the recipt from B&Q it was £11.88 which makes it £1.98 per sq m.But to return to the original Q: Depron works well for wing ribs and i also use it for formers in the fuz aft of the wing ie: low load bearers and hatch covers ect. If you want to cover it with heat shrink film turn down the iron to its lowest setting that will still melt the glue but not melt the Depron.
