Gavin Livsey
Hi guysHaving dipped by toes in EDF last year with a Kyosho Illusion, alas no longer flyable due to FOD damage to the fan, I am keen to try another model. My club, Boston MAC, has recently imposed new rules regarding noise and before I spend any cash on a new model I'd be interested to hear your views on the noise levels of EDF models. The illusion was tested and was well within the 82 dba limit but I've since been informed that the meter used was faulty. Gavin LivseyP.S Anyone know where I can get a spare fan for the Illusion? Tim Mackey
never really seen or heard a problem with the smaller EDF to be honest - sure the revs are high, but airframe resonance is usually very low. However the larger fans ( 90mm ) at very high RPM are screamers and may well have problem at full chat.
winchweight
I have an Alfa A4 and my son has a Phase 3 F16, both are fairly noisy, but I'd be surprised if they were much worse than a noisy 2 stroker. As for the fan, measure the diameter and you should easily find a chinese replacement on BRC or Foamyjets.
birdy
Some at my club had an 86db edf. So much for electrics being quiet!
scott cuppello
Give us a call, we have spare Ilusion fans, anyway, back to the point, 82db.....but measured how? If you are looking for a quiet fan, the Lander alloy can be reccomended in the right airframe.
David Ashby - Moderator
Nasa Steve has an EDF model that I hate hand launching for him as it (genuinely) hurts my ears
Gavin Livsey
Thanks for the replies, although I was hoping that someone had actually taken some readings from their own model. Is there anybody out there that has? I can't believe that my club is the only one applying the 82 db rule.Scott, thanks, I'll be in touch about a replacement fan even if it only allows me to re-test the model. Will certainly be cheaper than a shiny new model that I can't fly. I'd tested the Illusion in the usual way, i.e 7 metres.
James Hindle
I find a lot of the noise is either due to people insiting on using a ridiculously high KV motor in a cheap EDF unit OR that they don't balance the rotor.I've done both ! but learned to match the motor with the fan, its amazing what you can do, my lear jet went from 88db to 75db !
