James Humphreys 1
So after a little battery problem?♂️ can a veneered wing be repaired I'll add some pics, the fuze just needs a new bulkhead/firewall but I'm not sure on the wing. The veneer has crumpled in places and you can see where the wing has crumpled and compressed on impact thoughts please
Martin Harris - Moderator
Wingtip damage can be made good easily with only cosmetic repairs but the severity of the crease is dependant on how far towards the centre it is which the photos don’t really show. Right in the middle? Then a fibreglass bandage would restore strength. Other techniques may involve inlaid ply or carbon fibre braces…
gangster
May look a bit sad but at the moment but as soon as you start to repair it hope will be restored. Yes they can be repaired. Splice in a nes bit of leading edge if that is crushef Peal back any screwed up veneer and replace with balsa. If the wing is creased in a way that it could fold then stick on a layer of glass cloth. A foam wing can be restored from a very sorry state Done it many times
Martin Harris - Moderator
Use epoxy resin for any fibreglass repair that involves contact with the foam - polyester resin will make the foam disappear very effectively!
Don Fry
Bit of cold advice. A veneered skinned foam wing is great. Damage is serious, because the structure is compromised. It’s strength is two thin sheets, spaced by foam. All glued together. A truss in engineering terms. After an arrival, and repair, who will guarantee the glue has not been disrupted. Then you have two thin bits of wood, with nothing preventing up and down movement of the load bearing structure. It ends in tears, because the veneers are great under tension, but crap in compression, when the glue has failed. Not the end of the world in a toy, flown over safe ground. But, do a risk assessment. I once watched an A10, two gas turbines, after repair after a hard landing, fall to death, after a wing failure, de-lamination of veneer to foam.
