Gavin Livsey
Hi My club has recently been lucky enough to buy a brand spanking new mower to help maintain our already beautiful patch. We are however having problems getting the thing insured. For the time being the mower is kept at a members house just down the road. He has been unable to get it listed on his own contents insurance policy because it is not his property and the club has been told that we cannot separately insure it if it's not kept on club property. The alternative would be to get a container so that we can store it at the patch but have also been told that we can't insure it if it's kept there. Surely, we can't be the only club with this problem. Anyone have any comments or suggestions. One thing is for sure, if it gets knicked or destroyed we can't afford to replace it. Tim Mackey
Hmmm, not too helpful that Mr Sharp Gavin, thats an interesting post. We too have a club mower, but its kept at a memebers home, cos even locked in steel container, it would be nicked...and I suggest yours would be too. Apart from the farmer not allowing big containers and such on our field, the sight of something like that suddenly appearing will surely get the attention of the local scoundrels. We did have a big heavy powered roller at the field once, and that got nicked too ! Could you not arrange to sort of.... "make it the members property" with a private club agreement showing the true ownership, signed by the committee and the member? Have you tried several insurance companies to check their response? Martin Harris - Moderator
Try contacting Perkins Slade - we've found their cover reasonable for our club buildings, equipment and field: http://www.perkins-slade.com Not sure if they would just cover the mower but it's worth asking... Doug Ireland
Aern't lawn mowers considered "mobile assets"? This would make them very difficult to insure unless they operated under the owners house insurance.
Craig Carr
Hi Gavin as Treasurer of a model Club we have an arrangement with Walker Midgley Insurance brokers who specialise in arranging insurance for clubs and societies. They will insure club containers and contents (such as mowers etc). We pay the princely sum of £55 per annum for buildings and contents. In addition, although I havent done it personally, individual members can insure their models whilst in the car. For example if you pull in to a garage for a sandwich and return to find the local low life has appropriated your gear. I know one member who did it and it was for peanuts but cant recall the exact sum but it was for nothing. Contact them on 0114 2502770. www.walkermidgley.co.uk. Gavin Livsey
Thanks Guys, I'll pass the info on and hope we can sort something out. We also have a large static caravan as the club house. I'll check with the committee but suspect that that isn't insured either.
