  1. Thanks guys, I've decided to go for the standard lens version.
  2. My apologies if this has been covered elsewhere. Put simply, should I buy a Mobius with the standard lens or the wide angle lens for general aerial video recording? Thanks, Steve.
  3. Would love to hear how your chippy flies after your successful maiden Richard. Steve.
  4. Thanks very much gentlemen, I knew I'd receive some down to earth sensible advice. I will go with some lighter standard servos and an esc with a seperate sbec. Re checking over the model Richard. I'm fortunate that my LHS is 100m from my house and the owner/manager is a fellow club member so never a problem being able to peruse a model prior to purchase. If i buy the model my intention is to fabricate some gear fairings from balsa; it shouldn't be all that difficult to do and there's a wealth of Chippy info on this forum to help. Steve.
  5. Wow, what a timely post to this thread Richard. As I'm sure Pete and BEB will recall, I was undecided about the BH Chippy a few months ago. Now, a quirk of fate has led me to it again and I'm at the point of placing my order today. First though, I'm hoping to receive some wisdom from Pete and BEB. I've done a few swaps with fellow club members and now have the following bits (new) which I think may be suitable for the Chippy. Motor: Emax GT4020/07, 620kv, 60A max, 280g. I was thinking 5S propped to pull around 900w @ 50A should be sufficient. Servos: 4x TowerPro MG946R 12kg torque, 65g A bit OTT perhaps but could be good for the evevator and rudder. Would Futaba S3001's be adequate for ailerons/flaps? Recommendations for other servos welcomed. Last question for now I promise. I was thinking of an ESC in the 80A range. Would I be better off to go for a separate BEC? Secondly, given that there are six servos, what amp rating would be sufficient, 3A, 5A ? Richard, looking forward to hearing how you get along with the Chippy. BTW, is it the newer version you have? Steve.
  6. Four and a half hours at the club this morning; an absolutely beautiful day with temps in the low to mid 20's and more or less dead calm. I took advantage of the conditions and flew my Jamara Fournier RF4 as it hadn't had an outing for more than six months. Very nice just to cruise around on minimal power for some slow, gentle circuits and fly by's. Later the Arcus F3A bipe had a few more flights followed by my trusty old Calmato ST1400. Highlight of the day for me though was having a first try at flying an autogyro. I have a half built "Crane Fly Light" designed by Tom Wright. Why i never finished it I don't know. However, having successfully flown a friends HK Durafly AG today I'm now keen to finish the build.
  7. This year hasn't been so good for me either. I stored a few planes at my club only to have them attacked by mice. My E-flite Leader 480 was eaten away from the inside leaving only the outer covering. As well as the airframe all four servos + the ESC were also ruined. At the same time they chewed away all the servo leads + ESC leads in my Sebart Angel S30e. I was not a happy bunny! I have also lost two models due to TX (DX8) problems this season. All in all, probably the worse year I've had for model losses. So, empathise completely with anyone who's lost models. Steve.
  8. Posted by Masher on 09/10/2014 15:44:51: Like the chap who urged me, I would urge anyone to get one of these Crack Yaks - you won't regret it. Obviously you can also do all the moves with it and really concentrate on the accuracy. But also, because it's all for fun, you can really play with these things - I can do knife edge circuits in both directions now!!!!! Anyway, would be great to hear what others are doing, I look forward to Peter's ongoing input. Thanks Martin Masher, I also fly a small epp model for fun and practice. It's Hummer from hobbyking which is a similar size to the Crack yak. An absolute blast to fly close in as you say and really helps the whole hand/eye/brain thing. I will fly it in any wind and it looks impressive when it's inverted and flying stationary at head height. Steve.
  9. I'm with you Willyuk, While perhaps not quite entering panic mode I do think I'm light years away from being reasonably proficient at precision flying. Friends at the field tell me I've improved a lot in the past couple of years but I do wonder about their sincerity at times. Agreed about this thread being a great help. My thanks to Peter also. Steve.
  10. I really like the looks of this. Phoenix Models Typhoon. WS=1500mm L=1348mm AUW=2.6-2.8k Rimfire 45 motor 6S Anyone know anything about it? Steve.
  11. Sorry to put a dampener on things but; I bought a DX8 early in this year and it's now on it's way to HH in the UK to be fixed. I have lost at least two planes because of it. Initially I put it down to the Rx or a poor installation on my part but the Tx has been shown to be at fault. i do like the DX8 and it has all the functions that I will ever need but I'm not particularly a happy bunny at the moment. Steve.
  12. Many thanks for the feedback chaps. Peter, I delved into those google translations also and came to more or less the same conclusion. I did find one magazine article in German which sort of hinted at the model being a good flyer. However, as you've rightly pointed out, there are many areas to address in order to convert the model to electric. So, perhaps despite the small initial financial outlay all that extra work may not be worth it and I would be better off saving some dosh for something along the lines of the Sebart Wind S50 that Terence has recently maidened with great success. It would compliment my Angel quite nicely. Terence, well done on the maiden. I would be interested to know exactly which 580kv motor you have in your Wind S50. As an aside but on a similar tack. I came across a model that I believe to be relatively new which has a nice retro look. It's the Typhoon by Phoenix Model. very sweet looking. Steve.
  13. A penny for your expert thoughts. I have been offered one of these NIB from my LHS for what amounts to 60 smackers. The model in question is a Jamara Majestro. Some details: WS=1630mm L=1450mm Weight Airframe only = 1.7k Recommended motor is a 60glow. If I were to buy I would convert to electric with something like a HK G60 400kv motor or similar and run the model with 2 x 3S4000mah packs in series to give me a 6S pack. I do have a suitable ESC and some standard servos that I could press into service too. Very little info is available on the model and while I realise it's a bit dated it might make a good sized, cheap hack to get me used to flying something bigger than my present models. Steve.
  14. Excellent! Now what did I do with that old lamp shade? Steve.
  15. Hi Peter, sorry to hear about your Amethyst. I did read that the Arcus is more a less a smaller sized copy of said model. So far I've only had a few flights on the Arcus (in still air) and I'm still trying to find a set up re CG, rates, etc that I'm happy with. To be honest the model really took me by surprise for the first few flights in that it didn't fly like any other model I have or have flown before. It doesn't help that I'm having to use my old DX6i to fly the model as my DX8 has problems and needs to be fixed. But, that's just making excuses I guess? Back to the flying; roll the model to any orientation and it just continues flying in a straight line but with the wings at the set angle and, it was this that caught me out so much. By the time I realised what was happening the model was way off into the distance. Then.....oh yes....put brain into gear and apply some elevator to execute a turn. As far as my untrained eyes/fingers/brain can determine, there is absolutely no coupling, cross coupling from any one control surface to another. Or, perhaps there a tad but, in comparison to my other models, including my Sebart Angel, this is how it seems to me. So, I'm still getting to grips with the model and I think it will be a while yet before I'm fully happy with it. But, for once, I do think that it is a model that lives up to the hype and will certainly keep me on my toes in the near future and teach me a few new things in the process. Therefore, hopefully, enabling me to become a better pilot. Steve.
  16. I'm a Spektrum user. I use Spektrum Rx's in the majority of my models but do use cheapo orange Rx's in small foamies. Apart from being slow to bind at times, I've not had a problem with the cheapies.
  17. A DX6i would be a much better bet and needn't cost the earth. At Sussex Model Centre: DX5 @ 47 smackers DX6i @ 72.00 At 72 quid the DX6i is a bargain.
  18. Hi David, As Ken says the wisdom is to avoid having the antenna pointing directly at the model. With my DX6i I have the antenna orientated 90 degrees to the left and more or less parallel to the Tx. It's been like this from day 1 and I've never had a problem. Steve.
  19. Thanks Masher. I've saved the settings as Pete said and all is well. I've had good dealings with HH in the past with a minor DX6i problem. This time it's more serious having to send the Tx from Spain which will cost me dear. I'm hoping they will reimburse at least part of the postage cost otherwise I'm paying over the odds for a product that's still under warranty. In the meantime I can get by with flying some of my models using the DX6i.
  20. Brilliant Pete! Thanks very much. Steve.
  21. I'm in the unfortunate process of preparing my DX8 to be sent to Horizon Hobby UK for service/repair. I have a question. Would it be prudent to jot down my model settings for each model? I'm assuming that the inspection/repair may result in the model memory being erased. It will be a pain with 15+ models in the memory but having spent ages setting up some models I'd rather have a back up plan just in case. Steve. Edited By Steve Colman on 19/09/2014 14:20:12
  22. Here's my latest. Cheap and cheerful from HK but looks the DB's. Hope to maiden tomorrow.
