  1. Their postal charges can be quite odd, with some items I can get them shipped for their Hong Kong Warehouse cheaper than I can from their UK warehouse. I suspect its because they use Parcelforce for all their UK deliveries regardless of size. Royal Mail is cheaper than Parcelforce for smaller items, and quite a bit cheaper in some cases. Paul
  2. Thanks for that That's great news and Sig have a branch not to far away as well. Must remember to take a saw with me to cut the sheet into Fiesta Sized bits Thanks again Paul
  3. Hi all Just found a supplier http://greenairdesigns.com/ejc/index.php/materials-accessories/building-materials/foam/60mm-xps-foam-sheet.html £10 a sheet is a bit pricier than when B&Q was selling it IIRC they should it for around £20 for a pack of 4. I wonder if anyone will notice if I pull some out of the loft 😉
  4. Posted by john stones 1 on 24/08/2015 16:57:35: Wickes sell it Paul the pink stuff. john Thanks for the reply Jon I had a look on Wickes website but found no sign of it. Paul
  5. Posted by TigerOC on 24/08/2015 16:23:58: Jablite is EPS and B& Q list it as an item. Jewsons also stock Jablite. Note that the yellow stuff with foil is cellotex and is not a "plastic foam" but is easy to work with hand tools but does not cut with a hot wire. I still use polysytrene and sheet it with balsa for wings. Rob Thanks for the reply Rob The jablite stuff B&Q sell is the soft expanded foam that is made from small balls of foam, the pink & blue stuff is extruded and much harder. Thanks
  6. Hi all Anyone know of a reliable supplier of either Pink or Blue Foam. I did have some I got from B&Q some years ago for an insulation job that would be perfect for making wings but they no longer stock it, that was the Pink verity, now they just do sheets of very soft expanded or some yellow with foil on both sides which felt too soft to be of use. Anyone know were I can get some Pink or Blue from. Thanks for any help or links. Paul
  7. I had to visit 5 different W.H.Smiths before I found a copy and then it was the last one
  8. Thanks for stating the obvious because it was not obvious to me And thanks for the detailed explanation all understood. Thanks Paul
  9. Hi all A quick noobie question I hope Looking to buy some servos I see some listed as Analog and some listed as digital. What's the difference and what sort of radio system should they be used with if it makes any difference. Thanks Paul
  10. Don't know if this has been posted elsewere yet but there are reports that a Hawker hunter has crashed at the Shoreham airshow today there are reports of many casualties Paul
  11. Oops excuse the typo that's loud sounders. Dyslexia can be a pain at times
  12. Hi all I have a couple of the low voltage alarms, the sort that plug into the balance lead and have a couple of lowed sounders and LCD displays. The version I have has the ability to set the alarm voltage so with Generic LiPo packs what's a safe discharge voltage to set, they came set at 2.5v buts what's the safest volt setting to use. Thanks Paul
  13. Thanks for all the replies Got some plastic tube from the MS so will have look when I get home for a suitable place to fix them. Regarding fixing them, my model is of foam construction, would it be ok to sink the tube into the foam so it's buried. Thanks again Paul
  14. Hi all A quick question I hope In a plane what the best way to mount the two receiver aerials. The instructions just say they should be mounted either in an L or Y confirmation and should be 90deg apart, is that correct or is there another recommended way. I have been looking on line at other modellers installations and every one is different. Help please Thanks Paul
  15. Hi all If you like superphatic have a look in your local DIY store for a Aliphatic wood Glue (sometimes called yellow wood glue) its basically the same stuff but at a much lower price than superphatic. Paul
  16. Thanks for the replies What would be a good practical way of controlling the current. Thanks Paul
  17. Thanks guys Glad I asked before I waisted money and possibly a model. Paul
  18. Hi I ticked my charger does not have the ability to connect to the PC, I use an iMax B6 like a few others. I then remembered reading that it is supposed to support this option and that a lead is supposed to be available that connects using the Temp sensor port. I couldn't find anyone selling the lead or a supplier of suitable software, not even on the SkyRC site or any of the clone B6 sites. Perhaps other have had better luck Paul
  19. yHi Sending LiPo's through the post is a bit odd, if I understand their restrictions correcty. You can send an item that contains the battery in side it and you can add one more as long as it's in its original packaging, and you must tell them so they can add the correct warning label. You cannot send LiPo's on there own. Some carriers are ok but most have restrictions. The sellers that don't have any issues with sending them on there own do so because they don't declare what is inside the package often just saying electrical goods or model plane parts. A full customs search is needed to find them and most just go through un checked.
  20. Hi all Sorry for a stupid newbie question but I was wondering should a 2.4 receiver from one maker work ok with a transmitter from another. Eg Hitec receiver and Futaba transmitter. Is it ok to go mixed brand or is it not recommended. Thanks Paul
  21. Hi all Being rather new to all things electric flying I have been searching for information and although I have found plenty of building hints and tips, one thing that is often glossed over is the choice of motor size needed for a given Wight and size of plane. Are there any online guided to help the newbie pick an appropriate sized motor and matching battery pack. Thanks for any help with this. Paul
  22. Hi all I am going to make myself a hot wire foam cutter to have a go at making my own wings, I have most things sorted but have a question regarding the wire used. I understand it needs to nichrome wire but a quick search on eBay brings up a biwildering selection of thickness's The power supply I was going to use is from an old computer and gives both 5 & 12 volts at a minimum of around 30 amps. So what thickness of wire should I be looking for. I have small commercial unit but it only cuts upto 6 inch wide and the wire supplied with that is around 0.24mm would that be suitable for a cutter wide enough for 3 to 4 foot or do I need a thicker wire. Thanks for any help with this. Paul
  23. Hi all Sorry for another noobie question and hope it's not too stupid Landing gear and flaps, is it ok to have them both on the same channel so that gear and flaps are down together and both go up together or do they have to be on different channels. My thinking is as they are both used together why not have them both on the same channel so only one switch needs to be used. Or is my thinking totally off and they should be seperate. Thanks Paul
  24. Thanks for all the replies guys I probably will end up going down the of the shelf trainer route, but do like to do things myself. I have been an engineer for more than 30 years so am quite a practical person, I have build and flown control line planes but as said that was a long time ago, but what I built and often designed myself always flew well, well most of them did. Also over the years I have built and sailed RC Boats and was into RC Car racing for a while as well, so not totally new. I have also built a shed load of model planes as well although that obviously has nothing to do with building a flying plane, but at least I have a good idea of what one looks like Obviously I have to be aware of the old saying about a little knowledge being a dangerous thing Thanks again for the input and help Paul Edited By Paul Harris 5 on 06/08/2015 17:00:25
  25. Hi all Bear with me for the moment I have got the idea that I am going to build myself an electric fly trainer and have been doing quite a bit of searching on the net as to how to go about this. I do have some model building experience although that is mainly limited to control line planes build and flown in the 70's, so I do understand some aspects, or I think I remember them that is. So I plan on building a standard high wing trainer to the following Wings will be made from Pink foam hot wire cut and will have elevators or they might be made from foam board, as I have seen that this is quite a popular thing to do now, well according to Youtube it is. Fuselage will be either made from the same pink foam as the wings or foam board, not sure yet The wing will be a standard flat bottom design and probably of a 6 foot wing span Given the 6 foot span are there any set rules regarding the wing width and thickness Sorry cannot remember the technical term for width and thickness Given the 6 foot span again are there any rules regarding fuselage length. Finally for now given the size and suspected weight of an all foam model this size anyone got any recommendations for a brushless motor size that would handle it and size of propeller. Thanks for any help and tips with this. I know I am running before I can walk, that's the way I do things. Just like to think ahead really. Paul
