  1. Hi This thread may well have answered a question I had around the X8R and it’s use with the new FRSky X20. My original Taranis bit the dust after taking a swim in a flood. I was looking to move to the new X20, but wondered if I would need to flash or replace my X8R and X4R receivers. Looks like from this thread I can just flash them to V2 and they will be supported by the X20, is this correct.
  2. The hobby king blog stated yesterday that the warehouse closing down sale had begun and it was streamlining its operation. Today the blog said it’s uk warehouse was currently closed, due to a COVID outbreak. Read into it what you will, but it looks like the UK warehouse is closing, if not closed already.
  3. Hi, I too have discovered that the front login is not working, however I have managed to get in using the Forum log in. I am experiencing issues with this too, I had to reset my password to gain entry initially for some reason, then when I came back and tried logging in again, it told me my password was not recognised, and I ended up having to reset it a second time. Now before posting this I had to reset it a third time as again returning to the forum login tells me my password is wrong. I am using an iPad Pro and I use its key store to generate my passwords each time and save them for the site and I know I am entering the correct one each time I have tried logging in. Not sure what is going on but it seems to be accepting my generated password and iOS is storing it against the site in my keychain, it is then reusing it when I attempt to log in again, but the site is not accepting it. Each time I reset it I have logged out and then straight back in no problem, but it seems if I log out and return later it doesn’t like the password anymore. Really strange !
  4. Barrie I am in the fortunate position of being able to try out a 3d printer one of my work colleagues has one and is happy for me to borrow it for a while, nothing special just a hobby starter machine, so yes I will have one at my disposal. for a living I am a software developer, which people seem to think means I am naturally an expert at any piece of software on a computer, which clearly isn’t the case. However I am able to self teach and pick things up quickly from any media. I will check out your recommendations on software etc, I am a MAC user though not windows, so that may limit me somewhat. I will also check out the you tube videos etc. I am sure I will get the just of things, just need to start somewhere and see if I can learn enough to get going. As ever this forum and it’s members are helpful and come up trumps. I won’t hesitate to ask questions on my journey, and I appreciate all the help and pointers so far.
  5. Wow a lot to take in here. im not experienced in any cad or drawing package but just wanted to see if I could extract parts from the drawing and print them on a 3d printer as an experiment really. Not looking to print an entire plane or anything, was thinking of printing just a wing rib or a former. Got to learn somewhere.
  6. Hi Does anyone have any experience in converting pdf plans into software for 3d printing or CNC routing. Something like this  https://aerofred.com/details.php?image_id=80829&mode=search Edited By Darran on 26/04/2020 21:36:42
  7. thanks Andy, tried again here now and it’s working, weird.   before it was reporting a 503 server error. I’m a software developer, hence I have lots of devices my tracing showed a internal server error being returned. All is good now though so maybe a temporary glitch. 8. H anyone else not able to get to www.bmfa-rewards.co.uk at the moment. i tried on two windows devices, to Apple ones, one android one and just get cannot open page as server cannot be found.
  9. Posted by Andy Symons - BMFA on 01/11/2019 21:16:26: 3) Due to GDPR we doubt that the BMFA will be able to pass on Members details for registration with the CAA without their express permission. It may not be possible for the Club to give that permission on their behalf, we will wait & see. As long as the club makes it clear that by paying the £9 they are giving consent to be registered with the CAA its not a GDPR problem. Just a tick box on the joining/renewal form. Edited By Andy Symons - BMFA on 01/11/2019 21:16:42 This may be the case, but the club, BFMA and CAA have other responsibilities when storing our personal details under GDPR, have these all been addressed and the correct mechanisms in place, I would question If a club really knows what they are, or is geared for such things as a SAR request or right to be forgotten procedures. This however is not limited to the new registration, but it does heighten the risk.
  10. John Yes the controller does indeed plug into the receiver, my setup is X8R receiver with controller plugged into a spare channel 5. The TX is a Taranis X9D and I have a switch set up in my mixer page for Channel 5. But it does not work, when powered up the lights work but using the switch does not turn them off.
  11. If I go down the two receiver route, can I power them both from the same BEC using a y lead or do I need to provide an alternative power source. i assume that powering them from the same source will draw little more than I do today given the same servos in use in total and in effect the same zero redundancy I have today.
  12. Bob I had read that thread, which pretty much added to my confusion as to the use of the frsky decoder with analogue servos. Seems the decoder is sold as compatible, but people have had issues so seems risky.
  13. John i think when there is no controller a switch is definitely required, but in this case it seems to suggest the supplied controller can be operated from the tx via the receiver directly, but I don’t seem to be able to get this to work. This page suggests it can **LINK**
  14. Attilio Your right I did confuse the sbus with the s-port in my post. If I use two receivers do they have to both be x8rs and do they have to be connected in some way, or just both bound to the same model on the TX.
  15. I have been using frsky Taranis for a while now, and use the sbus for telemetry modules such as gps and battery voltage. I came across an article online about using sbus to remove the number of wires particularly in the wings of planes, and want to use the idea myself. I also noticed this months rcme has an article on this which I read, but I have a couple of questions. The plane is a hobby king c47 and it has a mass of wires in the wing which when connected with all the harnesses mean 5 connections to the receiver from the wing alone. I can only transport the plane with the wing off due to car space, so it’s a pain to connect all these up every trip. So my questions are The article I read mentioned that I could use a frsky PMW converter on the sbus giving four ports available, but can I use the existing harnessed cables to each of the ports rather than 1 port one servo. secondly it also mentioned it did not work well with analogue servos, is this the reality and also how do I tell what my preinstalled servos are, I assume as its HK they will be analogue. any help appreciated
  16. Hi i brought a Dynam T28 Trojan that has come with led lights, these plug into a dynam DY-DTM-1031 led controller. The only detail I can find on this is that it can be controlled from the transmitter. now the leds plug into the controller and it provides 5 output wires to use, three of them are on a pulse and two static. The other end plugs into the receiver and has all three wires so suggests that it is at least capable of an on off signal I have tried setting up a switch on my Taranis for this, but it doesn’t work. The lights just operate on matter what the switch position is. I have other switch configurations working so I don’t think I have configured wrong but you never know. Anyone have any experience with these led setups and know if it is indeed possible to assign a switch to turn the leds on and off.     Edited By Darran on 28/08/2019 20:14:14
  17. I know this is an old post, but I have one of these kits. Did moving the servo forward make a difference to the cog ?
  18. Some good advice here, I will check out the mentioned forum, and do some more research, find a simple plan and give it a go. Worst is I have a disaster but ar least I will have learnt something
  19. I like rc plane flyers idea, I’m not really a jet fan, but its given me some food for thought, so how abundant are designs and plans for depron builds and where do you find them. Edited By Darran on 04/08/2018 22:38:37
  20. Posted by RC Plane Flyer on 04/08/2018 21:31:47: Hi Darren. Why not try a depron model first to learn the ins and outs of it's structure and joining instructions. If I could suggest something like the Eurofighter as on thh BMFA web pages and fly etc and the move up to your own designs or balsa equivilants Hey, I didn’t know these things existed, not been on the BFMA site much. I assume you meant this one **LINK**
  21.     Posted by Simon Chaddock on 04/08/2018 21:46:57: Darran The biggest issue with Depron compared to balsa is it is only 1/8 the weight and strength for the same section. So building from an plan intended for balsa you have to know where and how to use more (ie thicker) depron sections and where the balsa original was sufficiently over strength that a direct Depron substitution is possible. As far as trimming formers to take account of the thickness of the Depron I wouldn't bother. Yes the fuselage may end up slightly 'fatter' but Depron is so light it will still be a lot lighter anyway and the extra size will only add a bit more stiffness. Wings are a big more difficult as they more highly stressed anyway and depending on their design the highest stress areas are likely to be beyond the capabilities of Depron. With the right glue (typically UHU POR) Depron can be glued very well to balsa so it is possible to build up a 'composite' structure where a hard balsa is used for things like the highly stressed wing spars with Depron for the ribs and wing skin. It does however take a bit of experience, coupled with some trial and error, to arrive at a satisfactory compromise but the final result can give in a very 'efficient' structure that is hard to beat for strength to weight. What plan are you considering building from? Edited By Simon Chaddock on 04/08/2018 21:50:19 Simon, thanks for that. I am not sure what plan to use yet. I have a number ranging from small low wing models, al the way to a 72 inch TN Dakota. Whatever I build will be a steep learning curve, if I didn’t take into account the thickness of the depron, would I not then have to adjust the wings accordingly, let’s say my chosen model as a Dakota for instance the body would then be 6mm wider at least would this not make some difference in wing fitting etc.    Edited By Darran on 04/08/2018 22:27:18 Edited By Darran on 04/08/2018 22:34:23
  22. Posted by Don Fry on 04/08/2018 21:23:29: First question, you plan to replace balsa with depron. Are you happy with balsa? Because, if not happy with the structural behaviour of balsa, you are stretching your knowledge base to put depron in the mix. Don Building with either material will be a learning curve for me as I have no experience in either?
  23. Hi, I have read many threads on here and the internet on building with depron, from some very talented builders. I am planning on having a go myself. A lot of the threads whilst not intentionally I am sure give details on a level that existing builders would understand but not a novice such as me. For instance I have been looking at building with depron from a balsa plan, and I already know it’s not a straight like for like process nor is it going to be easy but we all start somewhere and I am willing to learn as I go along. So here’s what might be Some basic questions for starters Should you stick to the plan in terms of size, for instance the fus is the same dimensions ? Also when creating a crucifix fus I take it you have to trim the formers and such to take into account the thickness of the depron being used, similarly when making the wing parts. I may well do a build blog when I start my build as I will have many questions and will require lots of help especially around where it’s necessary to change the build to match the materials. All help appreciated
  24. Stevan it is the 1.6m one with a weight 2-2.6kg. Thanks for the info, how did you find these to fly, my club mates think they are easy and very enjoyable.
