  1. Nice one Geoff, I kept the mag when it came out ( I see the reprint is online now) and the plan is still sitting in my filing cabinet. Most impressive model.
  2. I've always found that if you put a magnet in your pin tin/box/bucket, it stops them going rusty
  3. My Asto Junior undercarriage mountings were similar ( perhaps inscrutable landings over there in the manufacturers land are smoother than mine) i put the mounts where they suggested ( further to the rear might give nose over problems) and beefed up the mountings with lite ply webs and doublers on the ribs all the way to the ends of the u/c blocks.   Edited By Rob Fairweather 1 on 18/04/2020 17:50:00
  4. I don't know if you are looking to print them yourself, or to buy some already printed. I bought mine from a shop I cannot remember ( one of the big ones) after searching eBay. I ordered from them direct rather than using eBay to get them a bit cheaper.
  5. I came to the same conclusion regarding DW ! it looks like, as on my Astro Junior, there is no connection between dihedral braces and main spars ! I modified mine so that there was, and also modified a rib each side so that the brace actually reached it.
  6. I have a large tin, full of them. The smaller ones make excellent things to draw around when making cut outs or for radiusing patches. The larger ones, well . . . . for marking bigger radii. Edited By Rob Fairweather 1 on 14/04/2020 16:30:48
  7. I remember, many moons ago, I bought a little bottle or Solarfilm Solvent, which made doing canopies and overlaps so much easier. Not Prymol, but sold as solvent ( maybe the same stuff )
  8. Apart from a final rubdown, she is ready for covering. I will have to make a pair of ailerons due to one of the supplied ones having a twist in.
  9. Excellent work Tim, my lockdown/retirement project ( apart from a few kit builds) is to learn to put down my bass guitars and learn the double bass. Rockabilly with the band will sound so much better .
  10. Battery hatch sheeted. In two halves. Gluing the centre 'joint' first, then the sheeting sponged, held over the shape with masking tape for 1/2 hour, then glued with super phatic and it all came out sweet. i had to add facings on the fuselage/hatch to make it all line up nice, I used .8mm Birch ply. This also gives a better edge for covering film later, a nice crisp line that cannot be pulled out of shape. I added 3/16 infills, between ply formers and longerons everywhere ( using the many offcuts from the kit) to give better purchase for the skins. The same treatment was given to the top longerons, where each half skin is to be glued.  Im happy with the results so far, doubly happy because my Flair Se5a kit should arrive today !  Edited By Rob Fairweather 1 on 03/04/2020 08:39:44 Edited By Rob Fairweather 1 on 03/04/2020 08:44:46
  11. Wow, that takes me back a while ! I built a C/L version, did it tissue and dope in green, but that is all I remember of the building of it.
  12. Apologies gents, no idea why this Luddite posted the pic 3 times !
  13. Another couple of days, wings covered, capped and tips attached. No real problems other than the Pawlina ( never used that on a model before, though the fingerboard on one of my guitars uses it) trailing edge section is only butted against the trailing edge of the wing and one centre rib, I think a .8mm skin will be added underneath for peace of mind. Nose sheeted and rough sanded, I needed a.8mm ply cap to be added to the fuselage sides to reach the hatch undersides, no big problem Using the lesser angled dihedral brace ( still 4 inches under 1 tip) means the fuselage sides need a 1/8 fillet adding each side. the hatch being skinned in the foreground will be assisted by a bit of water, one side is a nice bit of balsa, the other resembles a slice of woman's heart, so will need a bit of help. I added 4mm offcuts to beef up the centre longeron for gluing, also used the same offcuts to beef up the base to give a bigger glue area. The two long longerons were replaced with spruce 4mm square section to improve rigidity. All in all a couple of days pleasantly spent. Excuse the untidy board . . . . Halfway through this mornings antics.
  14. Shaun, a different approach from DW on the ailerons on the Astro Junior, full span lumps of balsa on mine. You could try top hinging those ( tapering the front face ) either adding a few blocks and using Mylar hinges or the covering and wonder tape. i used some of the numerous off cuts to beef up the top longeron and the fuselage ( full length) to give the sheeting a better and straighter joint, maybe not needed, but peace of mind . . . . Especially on my battery acces hatch. Looks neat and well cut parts . im also going to contact 4 max again, the motor recommended for mine is the same as for a Magnatilla, swinging a 14 inch prop . . . . . With only 6 inches height on the undercarriage !    Edited By Rob Fairweather 1 on 01/04/2020 12:03:46
  15. Not much to spill Chris, Gordon Whitehead's 2x20 powered little one from eons ago . I seem to remember it's a RM magazine build article, I've had the plan and article for a long time.
  16. Yes indeed. DW models Astro Junior, been at it a week and just about done, 4 Max supplied  Flair Magnatilla, to be built British and from plan . Balsa etc from SLEC. ( and like Stuart above. . . .over ordered)  Flair Harvard, newly won on eBay . Thay are on the list so far, maybe time to order a nice electric pup from D B Sport and Scale . ive also got the plans for a huge Handley Page Victor for PSS and a DH Hornet, as well as a few others ! More due to my retirement than the Kung Flu.    Edited By Rob Fairweather 1 on 30/03/2020 12:34:27 Edited By Rob Fairweather 1 on 30/03/2020 12:39:35 Edited By Rob Fairweather 1 on 30/03/2020 12:40:58
  17. Another day and a bit more done. The cap strips and leading and trailing edge coverings are pre laser cut, makes for some interesting lining up problems as the cut outs are a bit big, but . . . . They all go together.
  18. In my Astro junior, there are numerous parts of the fuselage the with the same problem, with minimal instructions as to the possibilities! Im on the wings now, seems just the same . But an enjoyable jigsaw all the same. Persevere
  19. Glad it arrived promptly Shaun, if it is anything like my DW Astro Junior, the cutting has been well thought out, but everything has to go the right way up and the right way round to line up. If it doesn't match the drawing, it's the builder who has got it wrong . . . . As me how I learned that !
