Posted by Richard Clark 2 on 15/05/2020 10:29:36: Posted by Cuban8 on 15/05/2020 10:03:12: For full size flying, the 500' minimum height refers to keeping 500' from people, vehicles, vessels and structures - not a blanket no flying under 500' as I understand things. **LINK** Edited By Cuban8 on 15/05/2020 10:07:42 I've been a pilot since 1976, military and later commercial, and am not 100% sure but I think it is. I remember my RAF instructor saying, re 'forced landings without power' to ignore the 500 ft rule as you won't learn anything about forced landing from 500 feet. Then if you are not sure Richard with all your experience where does that leave the rest of us? I always get the feeling that some on here state as gospel things they do not know for certain, such as conflicting views on insurance.for which there seem to be many interpretations but few hard facts.

Posted by Ralph C on 14/05/2020 10:45:58: I was reading the BMFA guide to "Model Flying and Farmers" from 2013 and it mentions that it is legal to overfly private land (otherwise normal flying would be illegal). Is this still true? I am thinking with my drone that if this is the case, surely I can just find a public footpath (50m from buildings/people/pylons, 150m from settlements) and take off vertically from that and fly over fields? Surely I will incur the wrath of a farmer watching this? I can't see how it would end well. Grateful for any opinions on this. Thanks. Would BMFA insurance cover be void if over-flying without landowners permision?

Posted by john stones 1 on 11/05/2020 13:16:19: Yep, It's a no brainer for me, getting our latest goodies delivered Is not essential, but we're doing it, at other peoples risk, some going back to work are not essential just yet, but they're being asked to. So which is it ? The risks O.K if it benefits Me, If not it should be stopped. What is essential about the hobby stuff we've been buying, and people out there at risk in the process ? Go fly, be careful. I will, and I will.

Posted by SR 71 on 11/05/2020 10:44:17: Bob i live alone im 80 and i love my models, BUT Be patient or be a patient Absolutely nothing wrong with your point of view. Problem is when people try to force thier views on others who may have a different take on the situation.

Posted by Bob Cotsford on 11/05/2020 10:35:19: Possibly because we fear for our remaining sanity, a fair few are living alone, and has been said many times this could go on for another 12 months and we're not getting any younger. I find it incredible that some people think other peoples views are not valid. Incredible. Totally agree Bob.

Seems to me that the message from the PM is "Use Common Sense".Now if I am flying at the club field and stay ten feet away from anyone else who is there that is what I will be doing. I see no risk in that but anyone who does not agree as I said before does not have to fly.

Posted by Colin Carpenter on 11/05/2020 09:55:08: He’s as clear as mud ! However , I agree with Cuban as above ! Family members only! So we can fly alone in a club scenario with an organised rota ! Disenfect padlocks 🔐 etc ! Anything else will just mean NHS workload will go through the roof and family members will suffer in approximately 2 weeks ! Colin Seems clear enough to me. What distance appart before one is considered to be alone?

Flying field should be open. Anyone who objects does not have to fly. It's not compulsory so don't force your views on others.

Binding undercarriage using solder and wire
Michael Barclay replied to martin collins 1's topic in All Things Model Flying
I mostly don't solder now. I use non stretch braided fishing line in a neat whipping and cover with Cyano or epoxy. Neater, lighter, and immensely strong. Also quicker if you are able to master the whipping technique. Lots of online guides on whipping techniques. Edited By Michael Barclay on 09/05/2020 20:44:42 -
"The Scottish government has turned to crowdsourcing to come up with ideas to ease the coronavirus lockdown, setting up a website inviting people to debate the way forward. Are any of the ideas any good, and will they make any difference? " It seems so far lots of support for opening Golf courses. Great. If that were to happen I don't see how they could keep flying fields closed.

Have four new builds witing to be maidened.

The thread should continue to discuss the topic at hand, which is when we can expect to get back to model flying again. Unfortunately it has (no surprise) strayed into politics in a good number of posts. Nothing to do with when we go flying again. I agree, "The thread should continue to discuss the topic at hand, which is when we can expect to get back to model flying again". On that very subject, when the lockdown was just announced, I recall reading posts from a (by me) well respected and influencial member of this forum suggesting he was going to achieve his allotted exercise time by mowing his local strip. To say it left me disappointed in his attitude in the face of a rapidly growing crisis was a major understatement. Lets be realistic, there will be no opportunity for anyone to consider their former leisure activities as being appropriate in any any circumstances any time soon. Unless, of course, it involves isolating oneself. Even then, it's difficult to justify. I enjoy hill walking, what happens if I take a fall and need to call Mountain Rescue. You drive to a flying site and some fool pulls out in front of you. Police, Fire & Ambulance have to attend. We have to be realistic, this is not going to change for a VERY long time. Doesn't seem very realistic to me.

Graupner Vector Board. Best adhesive?
Michael Barclay replied to Michael Barclay's topic in Foam models
Thanks for your replies Denis and Tim. I have not tried Tensol but I read it needs clamping for 24 hrs which does not suit my applictions, and I have tried Cyano with no success,Tim. So far my most successful method has been to use Uhu Por, but instead of bringing the parts to be joined together after the first application and 5 minute wait, I wait for 10 minutes then apply Por a second time and wait another 5 minutes before bringing the two parts together. I find this gives a pretty good bond. I read that some have trouble making neat cuts in Vector Board. I found the same problem with my usual hobby knife blades so bought a scalpel with replacable blades which is much sharper and cuts beautifully. Edited By Michael Barclay on 03/05/2020 13:38:04 -
Posted by Michael Ramsay-Fraser on 03/05/2020 10:45:56: If anyone is under any false assumptions about how inept the government has been in this matter please read about Exercise Cygnus carried out in 2016. This exercise revealed how under prepared the NHS would be in the event of a pandemic. Ventilators, PPE shortages and NHS overwhelmed within days was the outcome. Recommendations were made. Did the government take action? Watch the death figures rise and guess the answer. Government doing their best? Don't make me laugh. Can you name one government that was prepared for this?

Posted by Steve J on 03/05/2020 10:26:41: Posted by tigerman on 29/04/2020 09:36:03: Right or wrong the Government surly will have to easy the lock down soon The problem is that, for a variety of reasons going back decades, the UK NHS's and public health bodies were not prepared for a pandemic, so when the government saw the Imperial study and what was happening in Italy they panicked, closed schools, detained large numbers of people without due process and caused enormous amounts of damage to the economy. They are now faced with the problem of lifting the lockdown in a way that doesn't allow the opposition to claim that they are allowing tens of thousands of people to die and without admitting that they overreacted at the end of March. I don't believe the goverment panicked, they acted according to best advice available.Opposition parties are trying to politicise this but people are not stupid and I think the majority are behind the government. I don't see the opposition parties coming up with any better solutions but no doubt they will have all the answers if and when this is over with. Unfortunately many people needed these strict lockdown measures including some in my own club who caused the shutdown of flying at the field by not observing social distancing. As usual many suffer for the actions of a minority.

I have been using Graupner Vector Board for the fuze on my last four models. Have used Uhu Por and Epoxy depending on the joint, and although I find these adequate they do not give the same bond strength as they do with Depron. ie with Depron the material breaks before the bond as with good welding but this is not the case with the Vector Board. Wondering if anyone else has found a better adhesive? Edited By Michael Barclay on 01/05/2020 22:31:13

I for one will be glad to go flying again no matter what passers by think. I can walk to the club field, and will keep my distance from anyone else who happens to be there. Something else, I live alone as no doubt others on here do, and this lockdown has been especially hard for people like us. So those who criticise should perhaps take into consideration that not everyone is locked down in company.
-
I see no reason why responsible adults should not be able to fly if social distancing rules are obeyed. Statistics show that only 1% of cases result from outdoor contact. If anyone comes within ten feet of me they are met with a raised hand and told to keep thier distance. Same would apply at the field.

Michael Barclay replied to TigerOC's topic in All Things Model Flying

Posted by Andy Hat on 17/04/2020 09:49:36: I have a Hobbyking UK order arriving today and it includes lipos. I was prepared to receive it after lockdown was over but the order was processed quickly. Edited By Andy Hat on 17/04/2020 09:53:27 So it seems Hobby King UK are working again Andy. Thats good but I always check EU as well because delivery is often cheaper from EU. Mike

Posted by Martin McIntosh on 16/04/2020 16:33:09: MB, do you know if that includes lipos? Hello Martin. I do not know if it includes Lipos. I needed fiberglass cloth and thought I would try and see if Hobby King were delivering to UK again from EU and the order went through with no problems. EU orders are normally with me in 5 working days. If you need Lipos just try and place the order. If they are not delivering them to UK it will tell you. Mike.
