  1. I built a laser engraver from http://3dpburner.blogspot.com/p/main.html It is principally 3d printed with cheap threaded bar and ground steel bar frame/axes. I built mine to accept an A4 sheet, but you could easily modify the sizes to whatever you want (within reason). It will accept a z axis which I would recommend. I have a 5500mW fitted to it which will cut balsa and 3mm ply with ease (several passes needed but that is what cnc supplies with accuracy and ease) It is another nice toy to have in the toolbox! I use Vetric Aspire for creating the cnc layout and files, this is really cnc router software but I just select the cutting a tool with a diameter of 0.1mm - close enough for me and I had the software already for my cnc router. There are plenty of good free cnc file sending tools available now - I use either ugsplatform64 or OpenCNCPilot... Eye protection AT ALL TIMES is essential (accidental reflections could be serious) and forced ventilation will help in not stinking the house out!
  2. A bit of a roundup of the news stories following the planned protest at Heathrow.... Mr Brown, who is registered blind, simply held the drone above his head inside the exclusion zone and said he would be handing himself to police for arrest. bbc news Despite sharing many of the same coordinators, the Extinction Rebellion group - from which Heathrow Pause is an offshoot - has said it is not backing the demonstration - although it does not condemn it. bbc news The Met Police has said it will "do everything in its power to stop and prevent any such criminal activity" and that the consequences of flying the drones are "potentially very severe". But Ms Dell disputes this, saying she believes it is "perfectly safe" to fly the toy drones at head height, as planned, although she has no formal experience of piloting one. BBC news The protest group said it had attempted three drone flights on Friday, with at least one successful, and 11 activists had been arrested, including former paralympian James Brown. sky news So....not so interesting after all.... 11 arrests, six morons, two dickheads, two idiots and a nutter.....sums it up quite succinctly.
  3. Either, and 2v is not too high for a standard glow plug.....apart from the cox glow plug heads that are rated at 1.5v. A 5 AH cyclon will deliver the same power as a 2AH cyclon...just for a shorter time. The 2AH cell will drive a standard plug for about 30 to 40 minutes from full to flat and the 5AH will last over twice that time...the clue is in the 2 Ampere Hours.. 2 amps for 1 hour or 1 Amp for 2 hours or 3 amps for 0.66 hours( or ~ 40 minutes)
  4. What? From space Denis? I would respectfully submit that there are better ways of detecting 10cm diameter flying objects in controlled airspace than using a satellite...or perhaps that is not what you meant?
  5. It's started!...look at all those 'drones' on the grass!...where are the coppers?
  6. Posted by Paul Marsh on 01/09/2019 11:29:34: There are several ways to protest at the new Drone Law, and this isn't it!   I'm pretty sure the Extinction Rebellion mob aren't protesting the new drone laws Paul.....   Neil....I wonder where you got the 'above head height' limitation on the restrictions of flying a uav in a no-fly zone? as far as I am aware (in my albeit limited knowledge on the subject) a flight is a flight with no altitude limits. 7. This week an Extinction Rebellion splinter group, Heathrow Pause, announced it plans to ground planes at Heathrow next month with a drone protest. Holidaymakers and travellers face days of chaos as groups says it has over 50 activists ready to fly toy drones in the restricted zone from September 13. Heathrow Pause say the protest is designed so that no planes will be endangered but police have warned activists could face life jail sentences if found guilty of terror offences. https://uk.news.yahoo.com/pop-band-recorded-song-greta-221505442.html
  8. "We are now trapping some of this energy and turning it into heat via direct thermal processes and photo-voltaic generation of electricity. Could this mean that making use of "green" energy actually contributes significantly to global warming?" It certainly contributes significantly to warming my pool.
  9. That depends on where you buy your petrol engine from Jon....
  10. this Hobbyking DC-4S balance charger is designed to charge and balance 2s, 3s or 4s li-pos from a 9 to 16Vdc source, I have used a couple of these chargers for years. There is also a variant out there that does LI-ions too but sadly not from hobbyking.
  11. I think you are mis-reading the instruction manual - The 68mm is from the wing leading edge at the root making the CoG about on the wing spar. The red line that you think is on the firewall is actually on the wing leading edge. A plan view would have been much better than the iso one. That would be my take on it. 12. Posted by Gary Manuel on 26/07/2019 01:31:13: If they are these drinking straws, or these they sound like the sort of thing that no serious model builder should be without. I suspect that 0.6mm is the wall thickness. It would be nice to know what the overall diameter is. Edited By Gary Manuel on 26/07/2019 01:53:38 I think you may be over-thinking it Gary....0.6x0.6x22cm makes them 6mm diameter.
  13. Guess it's too late but here is a development on the DIY arduino vario that Steve J linked, instead of using a 433MHz tx/rx to get the data to the ground it uses the audio channel on the video downlink transceiver, which is quite often unused. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLIa_OXW3DQ Edited By FlyinFlynn on 25/07/2019 16:40:51
  14. Posted by Percy Verance on 16/07/2019 21:27:28: It appears that from 2020 ALL new build housing in the UK must have an EV charging point. It's been happening quite often with new builds in my area, but it is now to become law, along with all newly installed street lighting having integral charge points.. /www.driving.co.uk/news/new-homes-come-electric-car-charging-points/   Edited By Percy Verance on 16/07/2019 21:43:57 Not quite true. www.driving.co.uk are guilty of sloppy reporting. The actual 'The road to Zero' policy states - ". Ensuring the houses we build in the coming years are electric vehicle ready. It is our intention that all new homes, where appropriate, should have a chargepoint available. We plan to consult as soon as possible on introducing a requirement for chargepoint infrastructure for new dwellings in England where appropriate." My emphasis. So, like all government policy, there is a get out clause that you could drive a coach and horses through. **LINK** Edited By FlyinFlynn on 17/07/2019 12:08:35
  15. Gonna need more than one charge point off every lamppost in that street. How long do you think it will be before someone sticks a suitable plug on a 4 way distribution block?
  16. Last time I checked indicator signals are not 'admissible in court', they are advisory only so best not to rely on them. Learned that lesson the hard way when I was 17. It is only one of the bad habits that we drivers get up to... like flashing another driver to say " you go first" whereas the legal meaning of flashing your lights is " I am here"
