  1. Waiting for the olive drab to arrive I started putting some panel lines on, masked the canopy and gave it a spray of some olive green I had , it is not the right shade but will do for an undercoat .
  2. Some amazing weather and quick dry paint and I managed to paint the fuselage alloy wheel silver then get the white on for the invasion markings. The cowl and hatch were done indoors last night.
  3. They all stick your fingers to the wood better than wood to wood . Eric No. 1 Poundshop fan.
  4. Hi G.G. I have not tried glass and resin but it is the best for ding resistance and what ever paint you use will require fuel proofing. I have used silver Solarfilm on warbirds and painted over after taking the shine off with 600 grit or higher. this method is not very ding proof. dope and tissue is good but be careful of using too much shrinking dope as it can distort the balsa I would avoid textured film for a P47 as it needs a lot of filling to get a smooth surface. I only use it on biplanes with fabric covered surface's . No doubt many others will have different methods so good luck with what ever one you choose. My last 3 models have been covered with brown paper and PVA but getting the right paper can be a problem if it has ribs in do not use it . Eric.
  5. That looks right Paul, I find with weathering it can look awful if over applied and would have been better without it. the main thing is to look at the real thing and copy that, it is difficult when doing warbirds as there are very few coloured pictures . When airbrushes became popular in the late 70's people were over doing it and it spoiled the effect .
  6. Thanks Ron, I will try that. At the moment it is in the loft I had it given it needs finishing and covering, it will be Laser powered, don't know if I will get to it this year.
  7. Has anyone used laminating film on an open structure under cambered wing? I have a DB Albatross to cover86" span and would almost need a bank loan to use Oratex Sorry about drifting off topic Richard.
  8. Hi Steve, this is it now, the cockpit canopy and engine cowls are not the ones in the kit.as you can see the wing ends are very crude and the booms have a lot of creases on. If you log onto their site they have quite a range and have some interesting large versions. Now I know how they build up I am going to try one of my own from foam board may be a D.H hornet twin. It only takes a few evenings to get to the  unpainted stage. Unfortunately due to the lockdown I have not been able to fly it . Edited By Eric Robson on 31/01/2021 16:59:01
  9. This is a Flite test P38 I am building at the moment crude but they seem to fly well, If you look on the Warbirds Replicas P51 Mustang thread Richard Wills has one on the last few pages which he is adding extra detail to.
  10. Tail end complete and 1st coat of primer, tried some aluminium under the wings but it was too cold.
  11. Gordon, I tried some laminating film on the elevator and the radiator scoop but did not do any more due to being unhappy with the scoop .it kept wrinkling so I used brown paper. I have primered the tail end today and the elevator is far better than the paper covering. I will persevere with it on my next build . Richard , I am hearing to many saab stories lately.
  12. That is my favourite method David. A length of 5mm rod from B&Q , flanged nuts from Screwfix £2-30 for a 100 no fiddling about with washers
  13. Posted by Glynn on 30/01/2021 14:10:08: Eric, I have just done your P38 decals, and starting the P51 ones now Thanks Glynn, looking forward to receiving them, don't know when we will get to fly our planes.
  14. Posted by RICHARD WILLS on 30/01/2021 12:39:29: Well , while you have all been plugging away , I have been painting with a nice green from Band Q called "Wind in the Willows"(note to self , must cut back on the fibre ) . Its from their Valspar Bookcase range and was about £3 for 238ml . Very matt and very olive drab . I painted it on with a soft brush and stippled the soft edge with a 15mm sponge . The only thing is that its started to look less like a P51 . Eric !! Whats happened ?? Edited By RICHARD WILLS on 30/01/2021 12:40:24 Richard ,it was supposed to be an F82 twin Mustang you have been too near the glue pot again.
  15. Hi Gordon, 85% glue, keep away from any ribbed brown paper it shows through. The car body shop masking paper looks to be the best bet I will have to try it next time. Got the wing primed today , don't know when it will be warm enough for coloured paints.
  16. Posted by RICHARD WILLS on 28/01/2021 22:33:56: Note the void. I can't avoid it.
  17. Hi Gordon and all, I use this from B&Q, it is 1kg. cots about £7 pre Brexit I dilute it about 15% with water need to keep watering it down as it thickens after the first time I do it by feel when the brush drags . No Richard I am not a drag artist.
  18. Thanks Paul, the wiring will not be as neat as your tidy layout. Jon, there are 3 different types of brown paper on mine . I first tried some from Tesco(not on this model). It was heavily ribbed and the surface was Like a Ju52. Richard told me to get the cheaper BP. similar to present wrapping paper I found some at Poundland, it had happy birthday all over it fortunately it was on the matt side. This is the best I have used I bought 6 mtrs. I have covered 3 planes with it and only had enough left to do the P51 wing tops. I went to get some more and they had none left only some craft brown paper which is rubbish it is poor quality and has to be put on as soon as glued or it falls apart. the 3rd paper is from B&M the cheapest of all 6mtrs for £1-50. it is lightly ribbed but this does not show after priming.. As it happens the poor quality has turned out very good I used it on the rear underside and one side from the rear to the front of the elevator and after priming it went all furry but after rubbing down with 600 grit it turned out good. Gordon I like access to my U/C. connections that's why I have them in the wheel well I've had problems with electric retracts in the past. Richard, you are rambling again, I hope they don't find you under someone's desk one day.
  19. There was an unusual mild day yesterday so I managed to get an undercoat on the fuselage . As it will be Ferocious Frankie I have used yellow undercoat on the cowl.
