  1. Lulworth! just watch you don't get shot down by a tank from the nearby gunnery range!
  2. Nice video Timbo. My mate wot lives in Glasgow has his cameras linked to a monitor in his motor so his 'er indoors can tell him where to fly, then if she sees a picture she likes he snaps it with an onboard 35mm still camera.
  3. I think the Atom Smasher might have misread my last comment. I have nothing against soldered joints... as long as you 50/50 solder and flux. Using acid-cored solder can lead to deterioration and failure of a joint under vibration. With regard to the power switch, I use one that has three positions. The "On" position has to be lifted above a detent whereby it is locked in position. The other two positions are "Off" and "Charge"; wired accordingly. I "acquired" a few of these while I was fixing Phantoms for a living!
  4. Elliot, is that the Spit with your new retracts? Looks terrific! Got any more pics?
  5. Anyone know how to get a "smoked glass" effect on a factory made clear canopy?
  6. I tried to watch one of the video clips from Elliots' site and got 110mb of a camera looking at the grass!
  7. I've enjoyed watching a craftsman at work and I've learned a couple of new things along the way! What an excellent idea of using small balsa blocks to help pin an assembly down. I'm an aircraft sparky by trade and nothing is worse than looking at scruffy wiring, using straws as conduits for the servo wires was another good idea. Looking forward to seeing how the radio installation goes.
  8. "Hand polished Aluminium" as it says in the book of words that came with the model. Maybe it would fit on your Extra?
  9. I got the beast in the air yesterday and the Cirrus servos seem to work ok. I had a serious brown trouser moment on finals during the first flight though, that damn great prop makes too good an airbrake! Spread the landing gear a bit. A bit of an ambitious project for over twenty years away from the sport methinks! The second flight was better but I think I had a mental block... couldn't seem to make my right finger flip the rate switch to high!
  10. David, thanks for speaking to your office people. I got an email from them yesterday with my magazine subscription number.
  11. Gents, has anyone used Cirrus Servos before? I bought 5 13kg units for my CAP 232G but have not used them in anger yet. The Hanger 9 manual suggested using the big JR Digital servos but they are nearly 70 quid a pop! I'm in a bit of a quandry wondering if I've made a false ecconomy.
  12. Hi Brian, I've just had a look in the business end of my OS Surpass 70 and can't see any circlips or anything that would prevent the big end from sliding off the crank. Only thing I can think of is the five-year old oil has gummed it up. The handbook with my engine recommends soaking the engine in paraffin to disolve any old oil. A word of caution though, make sure you remove the carb assembly and manifold BEFORE soaking the engine as there are parts in the carb that don't like paraffin!
  13. Had a spinner explode once. Bits went everywhere! If I'd been standing in line with the prop? Well...
  14. Been reading these horror stories about MDS engines. I bought an MDS 60 a couple of years but have never run it (used an Irvine 61 instead), now I don't think I'll bother!
  15. Go on then. Never tried a foamie, a flying wing (other than CL) or anything electric. Looks like fun!
  16. Thanks for your help Timbo, it works fine now. The longhaired one says thanks too as I've got the wings off her coffee table! cheers,
  17. A message for Michael Boland. "The Model Shop", Murray Street in West Perth stocks Saito engines. I drooled over one of their big radials a few months ago.
  18. Is that why the rx is in two parts? One part to look for a free channel while the other part does all the important stuff. There was an article in RCME some time ago when the first of these beasts came out but didn't really explain what the two parts did.
  19. Thanks for the reply, I'll have a fiddle with it when I get back from the pub! Do other radio sets have the same flaperon foibles?
  20. I've enjoyed reading this whole thread but to get back to the begining... Can 2.4GHz be affected by, say, CCTV operating at a close range? A workmate of mine has cameras mounted on one of his planes and makes a bit of money by doing aerail photography. I think his cameras operate at around 2 gigs.
  21. For my latest project I decided to use a "Flaperon" set-up for the ailerons instead of using a "Y" piece but am having no end of problems. After setting the wing type on the tranny (a JR XP662) to "FLP" and plugging the servos into their respective holes in the rx I noticed that the servo had full travel one way but barely moved in the other. Switching the tx back to standard and setting the servo travel to max (150%) in both directions then switching back to "FLP" made matters worse. Any ideas gents?
  22. I have a 45cc MVVS petrol burner and it drags my CAP 232G all over the sky no problem. Not sure about the noise though, doesn't seem any louder than an equivalent methanol job!
  23. I'm a devout IC flyer, a 27% CAP 232G being my latest love affair. I have a question about electric motors for model aircraft. I'm confused as to the use of the term Kv with regard to performance of these motors. As a professional electrician I would be a little concerned about getting any where near a 5400Kv motor (5,400,000volts)!What am I missing here?
